Zinc pennies are not created equal.

The one cent coin up until 1981, This composition consists of 95% copper and 5% zinc. It's the same composition that had been used to make Lincoln pennies since 1962 and is similar to the 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc composition used to make pennies virtually every year since 1864. The copper composition of 1981 pennies also makes them historic. This is the composition of the newer zinc one cent coins. They are composed of an inner core alloy of 99.2% zinc and 0.8% copper with an outer plating of pure copper, for an overall composition of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. Depending on how old the coins you are talking about, as only the new ones are more zinc than copper .
