Zinc pennies are not created equal.

I'm new to detecting, but in the little while that I've been doing it I've noticed that older zincs seem to age better in the ground than newer ones.

Why is this?

They are composed of an inner core alloy of 99.2% zinc and 0.8% copper with an outer plating of pure copper, for an overall composition of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. Depending on how old the coins you are talking about, as only the new ones are more zinc than copper .
