Re: Waterproof Ace 250 "Lake Looter"

Ed,
The liability would be too great for me to tackle your waterproofing job. If a component fails (happens all the time) you would want me to buy a new detector (understandable). If I was to charge for the service you would just be better off buying a good used water machine. But I have though of a simpler DIY project for the waterproof Ace 250. Using the same waterproof box. Then run your stock coil and headphone cable and connector through a split cable glands to the detector. Then mount the box in the same area it already is. Then there is NO soldering or extending the coil cable. I would mount an aluminum plate where the control head is now. Then mount the waterproof box on that. Here is a picture of the connectors.

I believe West Marine sells those glands in various sizes.

Re: Waterproof Ace 250 "Lake Looter"

Larsmed,
If you want to build a salt water machine use any Fisher CZ model. It will take a bigger box but the method is the same. But a used salt machine would probably be cheaper. But you would loose the "I built it myself" feeling.

Khouse,

Us ACE 250 guys love our machines so much we want them to do everything. Well, not everything, but pretty close to it.

Re: Waterproof Ace 250 "Lake Looter"

My first post here. I have years of water hunting experience and the first thing you need is a good wet suit the second is a larger container for all the gold you will be finding. Next if your box should fail and you get water in it stop pull the batteries out before you do anything, even before you walk to shore. Let the machine dry out for a long time and put in new batteries and give it another try. In the old days, ie whites beach master early 80's it was common to have to dry out your metal detector. Also you'll be finding so much gold and silver buying a second machine as a back up will soon be on your to do list. HH to all, Mike

Re: Waterproof Ace 250 "Lake Looter"

Larsmed,
VLP's single or multiple frequency detectors are great for fresh water hunting. With salt water some of the 3kHz or lower single frequencies work good. But for better performance the multi frequency VLP's work better. The Fisher CZ models are 5 and 15 kHz dual freq. Some others have like 27 frequencies that get a lot of praise.

Re: Waterproof Ace 250 "Lake Looter"

Larry,
The Lake Looter is the only one. If I ever get to any salt water I'll need a different detector. But for fresh water the 250 is all I need.

It was working when I sold it a couple of months ago. I think I want to build another one but in a different way.
