You have to get realistic! You mean if I put on head phones that $3000 ruby/gold ring would be a diamond/platinum ring? I really don't think headphones would have improved my finds in that yard. Your statement implies it would. That ring is my backing, where's yours? Frank...

It wasn't your opinion on headphones that ticked me off, it was your assumption that not wearing headphones possibly caused me to miss the best finds. I was trying to get across to you that I have already found the best finds, without headphones. Frank...

Head phone just drive me fricken crazy! I have pulled the cord off of two pair when I shoveled over them, stepped on them or who knows what! I have plenty of other things to trip over things I really need when I am detecting. I have dug things 2 plus feet in the ground without head phones, sure I might miss somethings, but I'd miss a lot more if I didn't detect at all!

If I could find some cordless ones that I liked or were comfortable, I would wear them sometimes, like keeping the kids away that someone mentioned above. LOL

I also where them when I am in a public place and people are around, it is rude not too, but I got an adapter so I can use tiny little noise cancelling ear buds, (noise cancelling ear buds kind of an oxy moron thing to say)!

Does anyone use hearing aids and head phones. If the headphones are the right fit you'll get feedback from the hearing aids.....at least I have, not sure with my new ones though as I haven't them yet

Here is a list of the most important things for metal detecting, in order of most important to least important.

1. A metal detector.
2. A robust digger.
3. A plan.
4. Any old headphones, cheap is better than nothing.
5. A trash pouch.
6. A wad of toiddy paper.
7. bug spray.

Before I finish with the list, let's do a thought experiment. Let's say I forget my detector. I cant go. If I forget my digger, I cant go. If I forget my headphones, I still could go, but I would not. If I forget my trash pouch, I would be pissed off but I would still go and only dig good signals and see how far I could go without overstuffing my pants pockets with crap. Okay working on thru the list.....
.
.
.
.
99. A coil cover.
100. A hand held pinpointer.
101. Lunch.
102. Pain-in-the-ass newbie friends.
103. cell phone.
104. gun.

Ive tried headphones, and quite frankly, the ace 250 sound just about drove me to the insaneasylum. It does not give faint tones anyway.

Well, look at it this way, 'the best finds' is really a subjective view of my finds and besides that I NEVER talk about my cache finds.
I could also turn it around and say, " How do you know I have not found my best finds?" Makes you kind of wonder! Frank...

racer117 I am surprised at your response. You must have a bad 250, or it's set up bad. Either way, good or bad, you wont hear the deep faint stuff like deep nickels and Indian head cents at 7 inches or so, unless you use headphones. You just wont be able to hear 'em. Every metal detector gives faint sounds, but you wont know it unless you gots your phones on. You just wont hear them otherwise. It's as simple as it gets.

Don't know where in the country you're hiking, but i wouldn't recommend wearing headphones of anykind in bear or lion territory. These animals are stealthy enough without you making yourself DEAF in the bargain. At the very least, i'd suggest you sweep the area first for recent signs of predators, before you sweep with a metal detector. A compromise might be to use the earphone on (one side) of your head and keep the (other ear) uncovered. Situational awareness = survival.
very rare to see a mountain lion, bears a little more common. lots of coyotes and sometimes a stray dog. i am most concerned with rabid critters like raccoons, foxes and the like.

I never wear headphones.I live and hunt at 7000 ft elev in the forest.Have had mt lion sightings also bears and snakes.I know I leave behind some deep targets but consider this;
I have found that 80% of my finds are 5" or less.I figure its a numbers game, square footage covered per hour.I dig a ton of holes and am not slowed by the headphone wires,or reworking faint signals.(not to mention chasing ghost signals). At the end of the day, week, year I am finding that I consistantly out hunt my two hunting buddies. They wear headphones. They are always saying how lucky I am.
I cant and wont wear em,not convinced my finds count has suffered,I cover alot of ground per hour and most importantly.....I have a blast safely.
my two cents.
pat
that headphone cord getting in the way is a pain.

Don't wear them either. Dig twice as much as my friends that do. I wear them sometimes if I'm in a place where my speaker might bother someone, or in a place where I don't want to be bothered. Whatever works for you is best. Interesting forum. Tennessee.

I agree the AT Pro would get on my nerves. After months with my F75, I don't think I could do a garret anything due to the sound. No way I could wear a head phone. As for crowds, I have a off button for that. Try pulling up a gold chain with folks around, go ahead and try it. Hey Frank, I could use some pointers on caches, you have any wisdom you would share with me? On second though, all you Garret owner really need head phones just in case I come across one of you in the park lol.

Any of you guys that don't use headphones, would do poorly, hunting in the UK. Sure you would find buckles and any outher large targets, but would more than likely miss out... on the smaller silver coins.

I can cetainly understand folks not using headphones, when they are searching area were danger lurks, like M. Lions Snakes, bears ect, but if you have a hunting partner, then taking turns to keep a eye out, could help keep you safe. Thankfully we don't have this problem, your more likely to get shot from the game keeper :laughing7:

My Bounty Hunter gives off the same volume for any hit I get, so there really isn't any use in me wearing them..
