Someone asked this same question a few months back. I suggested something like:

Front: Unexploded Ordnance Disposal Unit

Back: If you see me running try and keep up.

Or

Front: Anti-Personnel Mine Disposal Unit

Back: "Shhhhhhhh!"

Do I detect a hint of political correctness here? If we're after "treasure", why can't we say so. I understand that it might cost us a place to hunt every now and then, but if we have to walk the political correctness line, which we all say we hate, is it really worth it? I know it's not that big a deal, just a T shirt, but I'm a treasure hunter and proud of it. :)

P.S. Don't get me wrong, I like the suggestions. Just not sure about the reasons.

Yes, it is a bit of political correctness if you want to call it that, but not to appease anyone. It is simply a matter of survival.

What we think of as treasure is not the same as the general population. This subject is not new, as this was a hot button issue back in the 70's as well. When the authorities have a problem with grave robbers or artifact hunters on protected land, they are referred to by them and the media as "treasure hunters". There aren't many treasure hunters out there(at least the don't talk about it) today. And besides,if I was a treasure hunter I wouldn't be advertising it. The word treasure was adopted by the detector manufacturers to sell units, and by the detecting community back in the good old days. Back before all the regulations and permits. Nowadays we who enjoy the outdoors can be shut out of areas if an "expert" claims we are killing a rare plant or bug. The wrong word can be the fuel for some misguided eco freak. If someone asks me if I am looking for treasure, I smile and say ..No I'm just looking for coins. I'm not trying to hide anything and I'm not lying to them.

"If your cat had kittens in the oven, you wouldn't call em biscuits" now would you? lol

Besides, I think more people can relate to terms like artifact or relic recovery and /or preservation.

Hey jbot! Thanks for bringing that up, I was hoping someone would. It is good to talk about all the possible pros & cons of our hobby. It keeps us all more aware of everything.

..............HTH

Hey...I just want a shirt that says Metal Detecting (cause that's what I am doing) so that when I turn my back on the 15 kids shouting "Hey Mister, what are you doing" they won't be so upset ;)

er...unless they can't read :(

I like Raoul's blue Bomb Squad T-shirt. I don't think that would raise too many eyebrows...

Maybe something with "Historical Artifact and Relic Recovery Team", with a metal detector underneath. Here is my crude "Paint" illustration (can't tell I was an art major...), maybe add a small digging tool on the right or just center the metal detector better.
I like the blue color on the black background, with the silver lettering. This could be done on a white T-shirt also, same colors for lettering and detector, would be cooler for summer. A smaller font lettering could be made for the upper left chest area on a t-shirt (polo or sweatshirt).

The shirts are a neat idea. . . you may have a broader market/audience if you focus on the "historical" aspect of treasure/relic hunting. Each time something is found below or above ground, its finder generally wants to know more about the history associated with the object as well as the geographical area it was found.

Just another idea to consider,

ko57, I apologize. I didn't see your post until after I made mine. . . (too much ready, fire, aim on my part) I like the historical artifact/ relic recovery theme.

Just a suggestion. Maybe where you are it's comfortable but right now in Tenn, It's hot, hot, hot....might want to stay away from the dark colors!

No need to, watercolor, I think your designs are fine also. Many good ideas here. I like the Top ten list idea also. Bong recreation area ?? That's funny, I'd probably have a cop come search my car or me for that matter...

Bran-if you meant Raoul's Bomb Squad-I agree. If you meant mine, thank you.
Can you see a group or club each with their detector gear in a park or beach with the bomb squad T's?? That might clear everyone out in a hurry.

Wesfrye-I guarantee it gets pretty hot out here. "It's the humidity". Right. Black for cooler weather, white or maybe that heather gray for summer.

Piggman1, I think Unit sounds more official. People who didn't know you might think you're with the government or government sponsored. It sounds good to me also. BTW-I see you have a Compass. I'm not really familiar, there is one on ebay, I'd read at the metal detector review site nothing but good about those. Read some of your first posts-those are like jackpot machines aren't they? Pretty neat.

ko57, I meant I liked your design... I'd pick a professional looking shirt over the funny ones any day. I don't need yet another excuse for my friends to make fun of me... lol
