Jack, I'd suggest you have your friends who believe they are being "duped" do a quick read of the July 2007 Supreme Court ruling on their (SSA) suit against the Colombian Government, which, I might add, they won. Sea Search filed in 1982 a set of coordinates where they state they found the San Jose. The Government tried, unsuccessfully, to change their rights from 50% to 5%, they sued, they won. The trouble is the Government believes the wreck is not there, they had Tommy Thompson in 1996 verify the area. The President has stated publically that the discovery of the San Jose does not coincide with SSA's coordinates and just this week has proposed that they revisit their site and verify it's not there, at their expense. The dispute now is that SSA wants to have the Government to allow them to visit the wreck site so they can be reassured. Not going to happen, I would suppose.

I Was quoting Jack Harbeston... managing director of Sea Search... From a telephone conversation.

He is currently trying to raise more money to fight the Colombian decision not to let Sea Search salvage the galleon.

The San Jose is only where she lies because of leaks...
They stopped off Cartagena to pitch them...
Spies had informed Admiral Charles Wager of this...
He knew Jose and her sister ship were loaded with desperately needed Spanish monies / treasures...
Spanish were financially weak and vulnerable to a potential loss of these ships...
Charles hunted them down and engaged them...
Plan was to seize them...
Unfortunately for both parties...
A fluke cannon shot hit the San Jose magazine in turn blowing her in half.

Her sister ship escaped with the OTHER HALF of the load.
The amount of treasure actually on aboard has always been questioned...
And which ship held more.

All ships involved had incomplete shipping manifests.
There is no real information on what was actually on board.

Not a matter if "can"...
But you can almost bet they would try.
AND... almost guaranteed Spain would use the find as "leverage" for their wishes...
Which would almost certainly be in the "trading" biz...
No way they would jut "give" the Sussex without some strings that lead to Spain benefiting.
