You won't damage your MD using low or high impedance headphones. Although if the impedance is really low it can start to overload the amp in the MD.
Higher impedance phones have higher quality and use less power to produce the same sound levels. Batterys will last longer.
Go for the highest you can afford but do not think that you need audiophile quality. You are listening to tones in a narrow sound spectrum and not music which can be from 20Hz to 20Khz.

I have notice also the higher the ohn the louder the phone will be, I went with a set of 150 ohm an boy am I glad they have a volume control.

I was using 150 ohm Killer B's with my GTI 1500 and after detecting an item, the threshold would increase and stay there unless I switched modes or turned the detector off. I bought the 8 ohm Garret phones and the threshold variations ceased, the bell tone sound is much clearer, and I'm getting faint signals that weren't audible before.
