Almost forgot the coin was dug with my shovel, I think I will have to retire it, paint if gold, and give him it for a late Christmas present

Awesome gold coin and congrats on the banner! Forgive my ignorance but what is an 1848 mechanic?

The "potentials" were pieces of brick, pieces of china, oyster shells...
I guess the lesson is to never judge a book by its cover.
In some way that doesn't surprise me. As some of our best finds have come from the most unpromising places, we predict that 'if' we ever get a Roman Gold it will be from a random field!
The more you hunt the better the chances.

It's hard to find the words that would do justice to a find like that. That's a gold doubloon correct? Eight Escudo right? What's ever been posted on T-Net for hammered Spanish gold. Wow!!!!

I have heard tale of a Spanish gold cob that was found on a French & Indian War site in Pennsylvania - a site that I had hunted many times prior to the alleged discovery. It was supposedly found by an absolute novice in an area full of modern trash on the fringe of the main encampment area. The guy was taken there by a friend of mine, but before we became friends. Of course, nobody got a picture, and my friend doesn't talk to this guy anymore

I am a new detector this year and have had a good year. I have learned alot about my machine and how to use it but the two most important things I have learned are research, research, research and be willing to dig, dig, dig.... Great find and I hope you have a great new year.
