PICTURE ADDED: COLONIAL IRISH HALFPENNY

After two canceled appointments this morning, I decided to call it a day and enjoy the 60 degree weather. I went back to the spot i have been dectecting for more than 3 years now. I have found more than 50 buttons in these woods, but none today. I must have cleaned out the place pretty good, as the signals were sparse.

I was ready to quit when I remembered a TNet post where some good coins were dug on hillsides, so I figured I would detect the steep slope that goes down to the creek. I am glad I did. Within a few minutes I got a nice 69 VDI on my DFX at about 6 inches. I knew it was going to be large copper when I realized it was deeper than eight.

I am not sure what I have dug. The bust bust does not look familiar. I don't think it is a KG. I have it soaking in peroxide now, and will post more pics later. THe other coins i have dug at this site were 1839, 1809, 1787, and 1699. Any help with the ID on this one is appreciated [NOTE: ORIGINAL PICTURE WAS REPLACED WITH POST CLEANING PICTURE]

Glad you got out and got to hear that copper sound. I have no idea yet on what it is, but does not appear to have been a quality coin, the edges really are bad Anything at all on the backside. I am thinking maybe a token or French(or a counterfeit something or other) for wild guess right now.

I got out this morning also, enjoyed the heat, went to a sawmill site that earlier this month most of the sugar sand was like cement and all we got was a musket ball and a mid 1700's knee buckle, and two IHs> Today I got two more buckles, both shoe buckles , one intact minus chafe and the other a decorative piece of a shoe buckle. No coins, no buttons......... Three parital shoe buckles in the past two hunts this week, bit unusual.

Wow! You're always finding neat coins, Neil!! I don't know what it is, but you can see the profile nicely! Looks like maybe he's got a ruffly collar?

Looks to be an Irish Halfpenny. You can kind of see the harp on the reverse if you look hard enough. Don't know if it's real or counterfeit though. Great find.

On page 75 of Red Book 2008, it appears to be a Georgivs Triumpho Token - 1783. The EO is in the same position behind the bow in his hair.

Evolution is right. The lock of hair below the bust on the obverse is a dead giveaway. Nice Find!

Looks to be an Irish Halfpenny. You can kind of see the harp on the reverse if you look hard enough. Don't know if it's real or counterfeit though. Great find.

Unfortunately at 89 grains, this is most likely another counterfeit. The minimum acceptable weight for the Regal Irish Halfpenny is 140 grains.

It has a lot of nice detail remaining on the obverse, so I am still thrilled with the find!

nice. great color on the reverse. is that pretty close to the actual color? sometimes i find myself getting carried away tweaking the images on the computer to bring out more detail. don't usually get more detail, but get some great colors...

I did not adjust the hues on this photo. I should have left the green patina on the back. It looked before cleaning, but the obverse looks better after the cleaning.
