Found on south seventeenth street in Richmond Indiamawith the research I have done i have done i have dated it to 1870. They were brought into effect because of a rabies (hydropbobia). If ur dog did not have a tag it was shot on sight by police officers

I've found a couple in locals dumps.

The round one on the left says Kent Co. MD
No. 538
Dog Tax
1942

The square one is badly corroded, but still legible. Says:
Kent Co.
1502
Dog
Interesting Thread! Yakker

This is a 1951 Conway Arkansas tag that I found today. What is really cool is that I have 3 tags from this town that are less then 10 years apart and they couldn't be more different from one another. One is brass and shaped like a bell, one is made out of aluminum and it is a strip that is about 2 inches long and now this one that is made of aluminum and shaped like a doghouse. It even has a dog laying in the dog house door.

Wishing I hadn't sold my dog tag from the huge ghost at Creede CO. It had the old name of Teller
which was changed to Bachelor by the USPS.

Dug this myself!
"AUSTIN [TX] DOG TAG 68 TO JUNE 1, 1905"
There's an older one online (1898) but it belongs to the state!

Right?! Every other tag I find online from this era reads 'tax' or 'license', and even the earlier and later Austin tags read that way. Do you have any idea on the possible value, being that it's the 2nd oldest (as far as I can tell from google) tag from Austin, and the oldest in private hands? I do plan on keeping it, though, as it's the oldest [dated] thing I've found, and the coolest.

Edit: Also, thanks for maintaining this thread, it's been a huge help!

Here is an 1897 tag from Grand Rapids, WI. In 1920, the name of Grand Rapids was changed to Wisconsin Rapids, due to the mail having mix-ups with Grand Rapids, MI.

Here is one that I dug today. It has been about 4 months since my last one. It is interesting how this city will switch between brass and aluminum between years. I found some newer ones made of brass and aluminum both.
