Weird Looking Pipe Like Item Made from wood and brass. Weird!!!!!

This is another item while picking the basement at Gram's house. It's made from a tree branch and the brass parts are fitted on it. Kind of looks like a pipe but there is not hole going through the whole thing, it just goes in about a inch on the small end. It's engraved J McD on the end of the Large brass end. Now my Great Great grandmother is Jessie Macdonald (The spelling on the engraving is spelled wrong, but I still assume it was hers. But what the heck is it? It's about 6-7 inches long. Oh, Jessie was born and died in Edinburgh,Scotland. Thanks for looking!!!

I thought maybe too, Breezie - but the item would not have been able to handle usage as a cane etc. It would break. So what else could have went in the end?

That looks like the handle portion of a "sword cane" with the blade and sheath missing.

Why do you say it couldn't handle the usage especially if it is made from a tree branch? Is it brittle, soft, rotten? I've seen some interesting walking canes made from tree branches. Breezie

It might be a ceremonial or keepsake shillelagh. Or Scottish version thereof.

    Fabulous find, indeed!
I do believe it is the end cap of an Irish fighting stick. Awesome!
FYI, a name beginning with Mc is Irish and a name beginning with Mac is Scottish.

All of that makes sense about the name, but if the OP thinks it's too weak to be a walking stick, how could it be strong enough to be a fighting stick? Breezie

looks like Manzanita wood...very hard, very solid dense wood.Very common to make canes from...and one that size would make a perfect head knocker...womens self defense?

Looks like off from blackthorn tree? With ferrule for reinforcement wood or steel inserted used to disguise cudgel as a walking stick.
