Made the find i was looking for since many years today. I was on top of my artefact wishlist. Roman roof tile with a dogs paw imprint. :headbang:
I looked at hundreds of roof tile shards over the years to find this one. These are rare and not many of them are on display in a museum.
Some pottery turned up, with the rim fragment of a big Samian plate and the base of a mug. Only two coins today.

That is Awesome, Roman dog print.. I bet they could tell what type of dog it came from?
How do you think it happen?
After they baked it he stepped on it?
Really nice find West.

Awesome finds!!! What is the story behind the dog prints other then it happened before it was baked. I wonder do you ever find any with finger prints in the clay?

The tiles were layed down on the floor of drying sheds before baking. To fill a brick kiln it needed hundreds of tiles. Somewhere during drying time a dog jumped over the fresh tiles chasing a cat or for whatever reason and left the imprint which was later baked in.

Actually i have. The pic is a bit blurry but you can see where the tile was lifted on the sides.

West I'm voting Banner on this find. This is the kind of super unique and obviously rare type of find that I like to see up top. Out of all the amazing things you could find that's what tops your list and being a dog lover I think it's one of the coolest things I've seem posted. I'm amazed at how perfect the print is as well. And on such a nice big piece.

Heard of 1 locally found one & it went missing!

I keep thumb print pot mends but this is far more interesting & I know its one you mentioned a few times now. The odds were tiny, so I know your happy, & its a club I may never join.
Who knows you may get another soon, thats how it seems to work!

CONGRATS.

What a cool find and one that I've never seen before, a truly unique piece of history. Congrats on striking this off the list of wants, and it's very worthy of been up top. Is there anyway of dating a piece like this as I know nothing on the Roman roof tiles?

Thanks Pep! You can't date roman roof tiles properly without having a complete one or a frag with stamp. Stamps are mostly on tiles made in military owned manufactures, there are private owned as well, most of them didn't used stamps. Size of the tiles changed during roman period here. 1st C. tiles are 23"x16", later ones were smaller, around 20"x14". As there is no way to tell exact. This tile was stamped by a dog between 1600 an 2000 years ago.

He Cru! Coming over a tile and recognize the paw, muddy as a find is, was the most challenging part of this. I mostly picked this up because it was a nice big piece i wanted to use to mark my turnaround point in the field.

That's cool!

I was just watching some archeological-themed BBC program called "TIME TEAM" on youtube.

The field teams found a bunch of tiles on the grounds of a roman-era monastery that depicted dogs.

Congrats!

No joke.
Rare yes, very, but only Unique in that every paw & tile is different. There are examples out there, otherwise, it wouldn't have made his Wish List.
