Hi Everyone,
Been a while since I got any coins,
Got 3 Silvers and 2 Coppers today :sunny:
I finally got my Pine Tree Shilling :D Looks to be a Noe-1 Large Planchet
correct size and weight, 28mm X 4.4 Grams.
A solid coin with some encrustation.
note scratch on obverse and clean X on reverse, good metal right there.
this example is a late stage as shown by severe die cracking around date,
and is close to the specified original weight and diameter, no clipping! :o
The site below is the most comprehensive I've found about Mass Silver,
follow to section contents for more info on the series.
Pine Tree Coinage
Also got my first Barber quarter and an SLQ,
2 LCs, one toast and a '47 with a really nice strike, even full of dirt, she's looking good...
(pardon the soap bubbles)
Thanks for looking and HH All !! Herbie.

Re: Been a While, Got some coins! Pine Tree

Hi All,
just got home, logged on, and see a Lot of new replies, thanks everyone! :notworthy:
I wish I could reply to all of you, I'll comment on the two most important issues.
The Find: got word from an local 'old timer' that a certain area of a cove that I search on a tidal creek in NH (never this particular area) was used as as swimming & picnic area when he was a child, Got permission from the property owner to scan the saltmarsh areas above the waterline,
So, yesterday at 6:30 am, half hour after lowtide I stated searching in the shallow water.
This is where I found the toasted silvers & copper, as the tide advanced, I moved inshore, and not making any more finds, decided to head north to a Fine Cellarhole that usually gives up some goodies.
Speed scanning as I walk back to my truck, I get a signal, (same scenario when I got my 4 Reale Cob)
Recover what looks like a lead token, (I'm hunting in two tone, and didn't look at the readout)
I put it in my pocket with my other coins, then shop at the market for an hour, & drive 35 miles to the cellarhole site.
before starting the 3/4 mile walk, I empty my pockets and give the 'Token' a rinse.
Lo and behold, I see the tree clearly, Whoa, stop, jaw drop.
turn it over, see the X... Heart pounding, I pull out my phone, snap a quick pic & send it off to mike at www.woodlanddetectors.com, I marvel at it a little more, then wrap it in a piece of wet paper & head off to find some more goodies, (must be my lucky day, right!), up there is where I got the '47 LC,
didn't spend much time hunting there, I wanted to get home for some research on the Tree
Below is a pic from my return trip today of the remains of the hole where it was dug,
in all those rocks, I'm really lucky it didn't get damaged more than it did :hello2:
Thanks VERY much for that info on NCS performance on that Cent, I read the entire thread.
I was going to give them my $40 member fee tonight in order to start my submission process.
(I planned on sending them My 1620s 4Reale, 1640s 400 Reis, 1780 Gold Ducat, and this coin)
that is all on hold now. does anyone have contact info for the shipwreck coin people?
I'd appreciate some feedback from people who have had good results with a 'Coin Restorer'.
Neil, those specs are in Grains, they do make it confusing just using a 'G', 71 grains is listed as decreed weight for this coin, about 4.5 grams, this coin weighs a little more, one reason why I think it is a solid piece coated with a sand encrustation, it's almost perfectly round shape and full weight have me hoping it's not heavily clipped, that scratch showing the silver, and the clear silver of the 'X' give me great hope that it is mostly intact.
For the immediate future, the coin sets in a vial of distilled water, I love it just the way it is.
until I am convinced that I have found a good restorer, that's where it will stay.
(maybe if I carefully rub some of that sand off...... JUST KIDDING).
Longest post I ever wrote.. thanks again everyone! This find is proof that anyone can make great finds, I've only got 2 years 11 months at this detecting thing, (can't call it a hobby, it's SO much more than that).
Keep digging everyone, there's plenty of treasure still out there! Thanks, Herbie.

Nice, Pine tree shillings are the iconic early American coin. Did you check it with your detector after you found it to see what it ID's it as?

Thanks again!
Dave, the water is a bit chilly, I'm only going knee deep so it's bearable.
L.cutler, my etrac reads it as a thin silver, Which it is, like a lot of early Precious Metal coins. (this one's about the size of a quarter, and only about 4 grams)
one swing will give a 10-32 another will give 11-32, and so on .
I don't know about anyone elses etrac, but only rarely will mine give exactly the same readings for an object, swing speed, distance, & angle all throw the #s off a digit or two
She's a rusty crusty saltwater silver of which I've found many, seems the yellow clay under those rocks is what gives the rusty color tone.
Silver from the mud is black (and toasted)
I'm searching for info on other coin restorers today.
HH All :hello:

Creeper, let me get that copper out for a closer look,
appreciate the heads up!
No outlaw, I stated that the last pic is just an example.
It will never look like that :icon_sunny:
