1700's Shoe Buckle & More

Hi All,

I was hunting a existing mid 1700's house this weekend. This place hasn't giving up much colonial era finds in past hunts. The hunt started out slow and then I dug the Buffalo Nickel in pretty nice shape. So I continued to hunt and got a signal that wasn't that good, but just enough to decide to dig. Well after digging for about 10 minutes in very hard compacted rocky soil at 9 inches out pops the 1700"s shore buckle frame. It had some silver plate showing through the dirt and put a nice big smile on my face. Right after that target I dug what I think is a suspender buckle but not sure, it says nu way on it. When I got home I sent email out to Don and he id the buckle for me, here is what he sent back to me.

ARTOIS SHOE BUCKLES - (no's 26-29)
These large rectangular and highly curved buckles date from the 1770's - 1790's. They are named after the Comte d'Artois who as French Ambassador to England introduced them into this country. They can be plain (no.26), decorated (no.27), or more commonly openwork (no's 28-29).

Since Saturday's hunt was not to long I went out to a differant place on Sunday. I didn't hunt to long but got these two military pins. The US pin was right under a root and took awhile to dig out. The second pin was about 10 feet away from the other one. I don't know the age of these pins or what the second symbol means so if anyone knows would love to hear. Well over all a good weekend of hunting. Thanks for looking all and a good hunting to you.

Killer shoe buckle:headbang:

My kind of find..

Is that hammered on silver??

I forget the technical term but they used to hammer silver on buckles in the Colonial period..
Also US button looks to be WW2...

Thanks all for the great comments about the buckle. I think Johnny Blaze you are on to something because the silver looks better on it then just silver plating, but the back is not silver. I looked through it yesterday with a jewelers loupe and the silver on the front goes much deeper then just silver plating. Again thanks all and great hunting all of you.
