Hey Gang,
I found this about two years ago with a Tracker IV Bounty Hunter.
Thought i would share it with the class.
I found it about 4 inches deep in plain black non-mineralized soil.
Here in the Midlands of SC.
This type of coin should be fairly common here in SC due to the states long history. My area was settled in the 1730's. I know that coins from other countries were spent as money before the US started minting it's own money.

Thanks and a great forum guys,

Mike in SC

Thanks Haupin and Gypsy heart,

When i first found it i thought it was a token of some sort. While i am familiar with US and some Canadian coins, most foreign coins are beyond me. I knew that Hibernia was the Roman(Latin) name for Ireland, so that made researching it a little easier.
Great pic you gave haupin, as yours has better detail on front and back. The back of mine is so worn i could not get a good pic.

I am not sure how it got to where it was found, but it was an old river crossing area.

I found a few US large cents near where i found this coin dated 1849 & 1850.They may have been dropped by Union soldiers when they were crossing the Edisto River in Feb.1865. I also found some 3-ring Union and 2-ring Confederate bullets in the same area. I know there was a small skirmish there
( just a firefight not a large scale battle.)

I will keep researching the area as it is lots of fun,

Again thanks for the comments and pic,
Mike in SC

Even though its an Irish half penny, it was minted at the Royal Mint in London. The lack of a national coinage and the English Crowns ability to control coinage to Ireland in effect could and did stymie the Irish economy so as not to affect English commerce negatively. Ireland did not produce they're own coinage until after 1922. That's a George III. I found that exact coin a few months ago about 300 yds from my house. Nice old find, and well traveled.
