Went to a colonial site with a buddy today. We have been here a few times in the past. Right off the bat Aaron was pulling coppers. Two nice K.G.'s. I came up with all kinds of colonial stuff but the coins eluded me. When were almost ready to roll I hit a copper. Turned out to be a 1785 Vermont.
Not sure what variation it is though?

1785 Ryder 2 VERMONTS variety I am fairly certain after comparing the plow, the date and my crossed eyes ;)

Don

Don is it my vision or is the plow larger on the R3 & 4?

The space between the 1785 and the bottom of the plow is too close on Ryder 3 and I believe on Ryder 4 too far (maybe) but the Ryder 4 has the right sun beam almost pointing at the letter P, on the other varieties it is more off center pointing a bit between the P and U

OK I am cross eyed now as well. I believe you are right on your Ryder 2 variation. Thanks Don

AWESOME find Brian. I agree! Find of the day! Although worn...it appears to be well struck and centered on a nice planchet. Alot of these weren't. I got real lucky with both of my Vermonts' as they were in great shape. My two were Ryder var. 6 & 7. CONGRATS....and welcome to the Vermont Coppa' Club! ;D :notworthy: :headbang: Hogge

Awesome Vermont copper! :headbang: I am partial to the Vermont coppers...and not just because I found one. Beautiful design. From the landscape scene :icon_sunny: on the obverse, to the all seeing eye :icon_cyclops_ani: with surrounding rays on the reverse. Congrats! you won't forget that one any time soon.

I think I will be taking this coin to a dealer to see what they come up with on the variation. Sure seems like a Ryder 2 but you never know.

Unless you take it to a colonial specialist they won't be much help. Don in SJ is more knowledgable on colonials than most dealers. I agree on the Ryder 2 attribution, all of the visible detail is a match. Congrats on one of the most interesting colonial coins!

Awesome find congratulations! Those were minted about an hour from my house over the Vermont border in Rupert Vermont (I believe that was the only place they were minted). There is a neat article online somewhere about 2 guys that went in search of the original mint and ended up possibly finding it on someone's property being used as a barn (moved from the original spot). The article also makes mention of them looking for the original site of the mint and metal detecting it (I read this a few months ago, I think the article was written in the 90's). I think if you google "Reuben Harmon Jr" (he was the man that ran the mint) and do some searching you can find the article.

Great find and HH

Steve
