No that is not a typo. Today while digging a site I dug my oldest coin to date!!! I was digging every signal at a site that I have hunted for several months. Iron was everywhere. I detected around a big oak tree and behind the oak tree was another partially rotten tree on the ground. I have never moved this tree so I decided to pick it up and move it. I got a screaming signal right under the log. I dug down and low and behold there was a copper coin in the hole. It was muddy so I knew I couldn't clean it in the field so I stuck it in my pouch. Shortly after I dug a couple of flat buttons and a tombac. Right before I was getting ready to leave I got another hit on my F75. I dug the signal and a beautiful shoe buckle appeared. What a day digging. I was excited. Well I came home and rinsed the mud off of the coin to reveal a copper that I could not id. I sent a message to Dave Wise and he put me in touch with some experts who Id'ed my coin as a 1788 Vermont Colonial Copper Ryder-16 variety. I am still in SHOCK. I DUG A VERMONT COLONIAL COPPER IN MISSISSIPPI! Thanks for looking everyone!

What a great day of detecting! Wouldn't you love to know how that Vermont copper made its way down to Mississippi.

Congrats on a great coin. Just goes to show you never know what you will find in a given area.

That is the first state copper I've seen in the south. A couple NJs were found in TN but finding one in MS is unheard of. Wow

That is what the fellow on the Colonial Copper forum said as well. He said he had never seen one dug this far South. I am amazed and still in shock. I want to give a thanks to Dave Wise, Don Mituzas and Don Hartman for the ID on the coin. Without them I would still not know what kind of copper it was.

Congrats... Thats Nuts.
We dont see many old coppers down here in my area, and a east coast colonial is unheard of.

I am still in shock over this coin. I never in a million years would have thought I could dig a Colonial State Copper. I figured that would be one I never dug, because I lived in the South and could not afford to travel to the East Coast. I have talked to a few fellows that say they are rare to find up North much less down here. I am honored to find such a historical coin.

Yep, very nice find anywhere including the NorthEast. But back then everything traveled by ship, and that coin surely traveled over the ocean. It must have a great story.
