1796 Liberty Cap Large Cent and some Bits....

I've been searching for a colonial site for the last two afternoons after work. The site is not in regards to anything on a map, but just the suitability of the land and it's location. It's quite vast, but I've narrowed a 100 acre area down to a few acres that may hold the site. Today I had a perfect signal and swore it off as too good. Then out popped a liberty cap...




Also found were some Indians including a fattie and an 1875. The usual flat button assortment including a holed one, a sickle piece, and a few round balls.




The Liberty Cap wanted to flake immediately and started to self destruct. However I did some damage control and coated it with an Elmer's mixture to stabilize it. Thanks to Crusader for the tip on one of his posts. She looks alright, all considering.




Enjoy and good hunts. Hopefully I'll locate a site soon.

That is a dream find Scrappy ! In the pics after you stabilized it , I really think I'm seeing a 4 as the last digit, rather than a 6 - am I imagining things ?

Thx Steve. And yep, the detail was certainly in the patina on this one. Pretty much from the minute I pulled it from the hole it began chipping on the edge. Overall I'm satisfied considering I had to clean it to stabilize it.

It has the tendency to look as though it has an offset 4 but I think it's an illusion. I glanced at the red book and am pretty sure it's a 1796 with a 1796 head.

To dig something this old even in my area is a challenge it seems as the area was just getting settled. Nice save on the copper Scrappy.
Having a feeling that there is a site on a certain pice of the land when the map doesn't show anything is a winner to me. I get that warm feeling of satisfaction running through the veins when I hit the iron patch at a unknown site. Then digging something good is just a huge bonus to the search.

Scrap, congrats on the great save! I'm really pulling that it's a '96, and that it can be salvaged enough to pull a decent date...we pulled a right facing Largie a couple weeks ago, and while the reverse was toast, the obverse had some hope..and we literally, right before our eyes, watched the crust slowly envelop the once beautiful obverse. We will definitely keep a bottle of Elmer's close by for future use...thx Scrappy...Ddf

Me either you spoiled little jerk! That's a killer coin my friend. I can't seem to get back further than 1797 on the LCs. I have a pile of those. But my new strategy should get me into so e early 1800s coins

The chances of that being a 96 are almost zero but you ARE the luckiest SOB so it probably is a 96. FU Steve!!!

My new strategy will be to walk in front of Steve and look over my shoulder to try and see which direction he's turning. That should put me on top of something good.
