UPDATE

More info on the plate! See below.

Gather 'round folks and have a seat. This just *might* be a lonnnng one!!

As some of you already know, I've been in a silver coin slump for the last few
months. Unfortunately, I still am. BUT! I may have just *stumbled* onto something
wonderful! At least for my psyche'!

Something old! So, sit back and I'll lead you thru my little walk today.

As I'd said, I was in dire need of SOMEthing to break me out of my doldrums!
Now, no, I didn't find a mother lode, nor a cache. But, follow along and pay
attention to the "over all" hints of the day.

First of all, there was this thing.

2017 (389).jpg
I'm sure I could be wrong, but this reminds me of the
end of a bugle. There's some tiny markings I can't quite
make out but I think they mention something about
the 7th cavalry, and maybe...the initials of G.A.C. ? ;)

Then, there were these:

2017 (390).jpg

Hmmmmm

And these:

2017 (391).jpg

Little lumps of lead, what's left of a knife.

And then this wonderful little tag/token showed up:

2017 (385).jpg
2017 (386).jpg
2017 (387).jpg

This next piece I didn't capture a pic in the field
because, in all honesty, I didn't see it properly and
thought it was just some sort of bent square nail/spike.

I didn't actually discover what it might be until it's bath. :)

2017 (393).jpg
2017 (394).jpg
2017 (395).jpg
2017 (396).jpg
2017 (397).jpg

Anyone who knows for sure, please speak up! ;)

This next one gave me the lift I needed to shake off
the previous doldrums. It not only gave me what may be
one of my most interesting pieces.....EVER! But, it *ALSO*
helped me get by one worry I've always sort of had but didn't
want to believe. That my lowly lil ATP can INDEED....detect some
VERY deep targets!!

2017 (383).jpg
2017 (384).jpg

How's THAT for deep enough? With an ATP!!
It was just a 70-ish hit, but, where I was hunting,
that was PLENTY high enough!

2017 (392).jpg

Blingie chose the shiniest piece, of course! LOL ;)

This is the tag after a bit of cleaning.
2017 (398).jpg

But, I was a bit confused at Fishy's choice today.

2017 (399).jpg

This was the piece of brass/bronze that was over 12 inches deep!
I think Fishy knows a bit more than I gave him credit for!

At least.....if I am actually seeing what I *THINK* I am
seeing upon some close examination:

2017 (400).jpg
2017 (401).jpg
2017 (402).jpg

Anyone see anything? :) Sorry for the rough pics.
I'll work on it. If anyone thinks it's worth the time.

2017 (388).jpg

Looks like a rogue's gallery from some plain
ole "dumpster diving", don't they?

But, also, does anyone sense a possible hint?
Possible bugle part, LOL.
Lead drops, possible cooking implements?
A knife remnant?
Ummmm I'm guessing but....a pipe remnant?
And Fishy's favorite?
Also, it is VERY, VERY old, original ground.

I'll let you guys speculate.
If you recognize ANYthing up there, feel free to speak up.

The game's afoot! LOL :)

Thank you kindly!

Hi Whadi! The tag is cool, probably some local history there with some research. I dig a lot of them and always a heart stop moment because they are round big and brass that sound great. The horn thing looks old and unusual. Any other markings? Is there any threading? Lead or brass? A pewter pipe? The rest of the big metal objects look like the overload targets I try to avoid or the big deep brass objects that I give up on most of the time. Your in an old spot, you'll have days like this, but if you hit it tomorrow and maybe look for an adjacent section of ground that looks promising. Maybe not so many targets, but if you can cover some sq footage you might start hitting the silver coins again. Good luck!

Lots of questions! LOL
The tag is local and there's some history circa 1900.

The horn thing really has no markings. It seems to be brass with maybe a silver plating, no threading.

The little droplets appear to be lead.

The big items have shaker tops. Like maybe a large scale salt shaker.

The pipe? It seems pretty sturdy, I don't know how to tell pewter but it appears to
be almost solid brass.

I know for a fact that the ground there is very old, (original), ground. With lots
of history. I'm trying to determine if this small concentration of relics might indicate some
sort of camp that has been unknown. If coins come from here, for me, so much the better.
But every one of us dreams of uncovering a yet to be discovered historic place. This, just *might*
be mine. It'll take lots more time to determine if it was just a fluke.

I feel that the piece with an eagle's talons showing is very important in that determination. I was hoping to get
some help from all the experts here. So far, it doesn't seem that it's interesting enough. :dontknow:
Unless........they are all busy trying to find something like it. ;)

Your ATP was certainly on point with depth!
Very interesting parts & pieces indeed! Congrats!

The mouth piece & tag may help confirm your suspicions.
The eagle may require a little more careful toothpick cleaning.
That is an awesome find!
Congrats!
Hopefully some of our experts can help with ID.

That was a walk on a different level, a thrill for sure!
...i get excited when i find car parts. πŸ˜„

Well done WHADIFIND!

The piece at the bottom, the sheet brass, appears to have a perched eagle on it... right?

It does not look like part of a breast plate, but it might be something good. Looks really old and green too.

Well done sir!

Great assortment of finds and quite a change of finds. It's the second time only I see a pewter pipe. I hope we'll see that eagle cleaned. Congrats!

Your salt shaker top could be a pounce pot lid. The other "strainer" thing may be a tea ball.

Your bugle bell could be the top of a brass bud vase.

Broken table knife... Lead bits...

I'm thinking you've come across an old house site.

at the risk of ad-nauseum ;)

Ok folks! I have a "lil" dab more info on the "plate".

I took the risk and with some VERY light and careful encouragement....
I managed to get the eagle to unfurl his wings, a little:

2017 (405).jpg

Here's the three pieces again.

2017 (404).jpg

I tried to show the 2 little holes I'd spoken about. This edge of the piece
appears to be sort of rectangular. The other hole is right in the crease of
the other corner. Can't be moved.

2017 (406).jpg

Have to use your mind to sort of envision the
whole picture. This is the bottom of the eagle.

2017 (407).jpg

2017 (408).jpg

The top of the eagle. Notice, the 2 holes are up top.

AND...

You're not seeing things!

Any researchers best friend!!!

WORDS!!!! THAT I CAN READ!!! LOL

2017 (409).jpg
2017 (410).jpg

Now.....THAT....should help pin it down!! LOL

Thanks for your help!

the eagle item is the folded up sheetmetal body remains of a black powder colt pistol powder flask -- the bugle bell might be the remains of a bugle from a 7th calvary troopers horn check the roles for a bugler with those 3 letters in his name -- ---note any GAR marked item --might be grand army of the republic related -- frat group of union civil war vets ...

Actually, the markings on the "bugle" like thing were said in jest. The initials I used? G A C? George Armstrong Custer. :tongue3:

The eagle piece is the real key, and maybe, the pipe looking thing. On the "What Is It" forum it appears to have to do with this:

https://www.rockislandauction.com/detail/57/1225/colt-1849#detail

We're just trying to figure out how this piece, that looks like it was flat at one time, with two nail holes.
Could've been part of a rounded flask. Still, all in all, pretty exciting!
Thanks!

the holes are where it was joined at --the words on it --colt * as in the pistol maker and the eagle give it away --it was squashed flat which folded it flat --instead of its proper rounded shape --it was a hoallow body type item --a black powder pistol flask
