I headed off to my little corner of history this morning for a few hours. After finding my first Colonial here yesterday, I was saying to myself "there is more". Not disapointed.......

The first hole of the morning was the axe head. Go figure, I had to carry that in my pouch for the next two hours. A little while later the small buckle showed up. The next keeper was the Tombac button. This one is a little different than any other that I have dug. The next target was Draped Bust #4 from the field! Once again just a whisper. Very deep, maybe ten inches. Right out of the ground in the best condition possible! I knew right away that I had a variety also, 1800, 80 over 79. Getting kinda used to finding these, so in my watch pocket it goes and back to swinging.
I searched for another hour and added the large flat button to the days keepers. On the walk through the field home, swinging wildly "as it always happens" I get a signal that is telling me possibly a copper cent, 30/32 on my minelab. pinpointed and out came the final find of the morning..... Massachusettes Civil War button? I think I am right.....

I am going to do a couple of posts. I took my camera with me today ;D

Now there's my kind of a day, both a great button and a coin! I hope to be so lucky over the next two days!

I agree, you can't hope for better condition out of most dirt.

Brnn, check again, I believe the 31 is nearly flat and has tighter curve to the scroll then the 32?.

What a great field! The 1800 is one of eleven varieties that are overdates, I was hoping yours was anything but Sheldon 196, but it is a Sheldon 196. (The only variety that is Very Common of the eleven. :() http://www.largecents.net/collection/1800drbust.html

Your button, I have not looked at the front at all, just the backmark and a bit hard to say with 100% certainty, but it looks like the backmark of the one in Tice's book (Fig 6-5) that says 1860s-1870s. So it is possible a CW era button, but not certain based on that range of possible dates.

Thank You Don. I was hopeing you would show up :notworthy:
I was just now looking at PENNY WHIMSY !! 196 is what I was seeing too. Who cares what the variety is  Look at the condition of this baby !!

I am out of peroxid right now >:( The MRS. has gone on a mercy run for me ;D

I want to touch up a spot on both sides with a Q-tip and call it done.

I will post an "after" pic when it is done. In fact I will post all four :headbang:

Your coin really needs no more cleaning other than wet q-tips to remove what is left, don't overdue it where those blue/green areas are showing on the rim.

Yes, great detail, certain years had a better relief strike than others and evidently yours is one of them, I believe I have a 1798 that is similar in raised detail..
