1803 Large Cent & "26" British Reg. Button

Wow, what a rush. Went out to hist. Rev War location in NY around 6:30pm with Eddie and we are finding newer junk around the site leading us to believe it's all been filled. Then we hit another area and he pulls out an 1805 Large Cent in condition I've never seen, clear date spectacular on the back all very clear. I got about 10 feet from him and pull out exact same condition, 1803 Large Cent, the oldest coin I've ever gotten a date from. I have several others in the 1700s, but no dates at all. I go a little further, right in the same area and get a "26" button, British uniform of 26 Regiment from what I've been told by a button expert. He is going to authenticate it because there's always a chance it's from a reenactment in the area. It has some string still attached, but I've been told that is quite possible under the right conditions (anyone else found legit buttons w/string?). I can't get close photos any clearer with current camera, but will try to do better than this one later. (Also, I was so fired up that I committed the ultimate sin and totally forgot to pick up one of my kids from their friend's house. Was supposed to be 9:30pm and I got a call at 10:30: "Are you picking me up!" and I'm photographing my finds and oblivious to everything. There could have been a nuclear strike and I wouldn't have noticed.)

Very nice Bergie, WTG!!!
You might try holding a magnifying glass in front of that camera for close-ups. Worked pretty good for me most of the time... I'd love to see the green patina on the Large Cent...
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

Very exciting find! You never know - even at the "filled" sites. You can try backing away with the camera and then editing the picture using the crop tool. Usually the resolution is so high that when you crop 75% of the picture you are left with a nice 400 pixel photo.

Great find . If the string is still intact,it could be that it had been soaked in resin, oil or waxed, protecting it from the elements....People find bits of cloth or string that have survived after all these years....so hopefully you have the real deal.....WTG

Great finds for sure!

Just back-off with your camera. Take a picture about 2,3, etc., feet from the coins and then crop the picture. View it to see if it's large enough.

You can also use a large magnifying glass and what you see in the glass is what the camera sees. This takes practice and usually works great once you get it.

Many times even a cheap scanner gets a great picture.

Some people forget too, just take the photo from farther away, and enlarge and crop using your photo softwear. It usually works great.
Nice Digs!!!

Thanks for the feedback. Needless to say, we searched until dark, which wasn't much after we found these, and will be going back after work today.

Congrats on the Large Cent and button.Such awesome finds!
That Large Cent could be worth a considerable sum of money even at AG depending on the variety.
Great story about the finds.I couldn't help but LOL. Especialy the part about forgetting to pick up one of your kids from a friends house. You were definitely oblivious to the world around you at the time.
Best of luck to you and HH!
