1818 Large Cent & W & R Smith C1820-1832? Navy Coat Button

Back to the field today and came up with a heavily encrusted 1818 Large Cent and a W & R Smith Navy coat button that's missing its shank. The Large Cent did not clean up well at all, but the button cleaned up really nice. I looked online at a cool button site called The Treasure Depot Button Project http://www.thetreasuredepot.com/cayenna/index.html which has lots of military buttons, but I could not find an exact match for my button. Similarly designed buttons date from 1820-1832. If anyone can date this button I would appreciate it. Also, I did find out that W & R Smith were in business from 1790 to 1832.

Hey Rob,

Yeah, this is a field I first hit over two years ago. After finding a few Large Cents and a 1797 Cartwheel Penny (totally worn smooth), the good signals ran out and I gave up on it until about six months ago when I started hunting it again. I'm glad I did - in the last six months this field has produce a 1737 King George Copper (nice readable date), the 1877 Seated Liberty Half Dollar and Quarter, 5 more Large Cents, the 1828 Half Cent, and several Indian Head Pennies.

Woods can hold lots of great finds, since what's woods today might have been farmland 100 or 200 years ago. Farmland is some of the best places to hunt, because season after season, year after year, farm hands were in those fields and they dropped stuff!

No, it's a dormant field that hasn't been used for farming for probably 50 years. It's either owned by the town or the industrial complex next door to be preserved as open space for the neighborhood. At least that's what a local told me who was in there walking his dog. The reason that the field came alive with good finds, is, number one, it's big, probably at least 100 acres, and number two, many areas are hard to hunt, with these nasty craggly crab apples trees that are growing very close to one an other. Also, most areas of the field do not produce signals.
