Hello All, So I finally got out yesterday for a few hours. Had to go into the city because everything around here is still frozen. In fact everything down there was also..lol. I had a hell of a time digging through the frozen ground. But once I got down passed 5inch it was good.
So my first target was the bag seal, it was down about 8inches, when it popped out i was like cool im not skunked! Then about a half hour later i pooped out the smooth KG. .It was a terrible signal, actually all the signals were bad one's, not one said dig me..Must of been the frozen ground? ?
My next signal was the capped bust..
That was down about the whole size of my leash digger..When it came out i could see the eagle on the back, I was like yea baby!!! Capped bust..It's in bad condition though..Worst silver i ever dug.. but what the hell ill take it..lol.
Also found a Indian and a cool key..
Then my last signal was the NJ copper,
I got this crappy signal that said 10inch,
I dug about a 8inch plug flipped it over and the signal disappeared? ? I was like oh no you dont, it was there in the first place i know its still there.HaHa..
Dug down a few more inches a bam it was there flipped right out of the hole and on the ground. ..I love when that happens..lol...
So all in all i had a fun day, It was sooo nice to get out..Alot of work though trying to get through the ground..
Im posting a link to the bag seal, it seems that there are not to many of these found in the USA..There from the mid 1640s
If anyone has anymore info that would be great..Thanks for looking.
George
Ps..I threw in some dirty pics, for Ahab8, i know he likes dirty pics..lol

Great finds buddy! I'm glad you were able to get out. That lead seal is a hell of a nice early find. And way different than most I've seen. Very cool that you pulled a bust dime as well. They're not easy to find. I'd call that a great overall hunt for this time of year. And thank you for the dirty pics. I love em

Really awesome day George! I'm hooked on silver so the Capped Bust is my fav but all great finds! Made even more special by the extra effort that it took to recover them.

It takes a great deal of effort to chip through 5 inches of frozen ground. That's a nice lead seal - lot of crisp detail on that one.

I haven't done any research but I think that Lead Seal is a cloth seal. Also, I learnt a long time ago never to clean lead tokens or seals with water (or anything) because it takes of the layers of oxidation. Personally it looked better before cleaning. Still a great looking piece & in really good shape, I assume a non-ploughed field?

I did some research on it and yes it is a cloth seal from Holland with the coat of arms from the town..They said its from like 1640s..
And after i washed it i was very disappointed, now i know not to use water, just dry brush..i will not make that mistake again. .
And it came from a gathering place of the early settlement of colonial men..

I did it to loads of Medieval/later lead tokens until I met an expert on them. Now I just dry clean them & even leave a little mud sometimes.

A good hunt for early February! Heck, a lead seal which is not a common find here, the Bust silver, IH, Key and of course what I am interested in the NJ copper. Dang, spent about half hour trying to get the variety and not sure at all. Looking now at M.48-g, Nope not that one!, but very hard to say, especially since I cannot make out the 3 points on the shield on the reverse..... Have you made any guess on it? :) State and County, but I think I know, but PM me anyway please. Don

Latest guess till possibly better photos is: http://www.coinfacts.com/colonial_coins/new_jersey_coppers/maris_39a.htm

A real rarity that dime! From the same year Texas signed its declaration of independence.

Love that cloth seal Vino! I've dug a couple over the years, but they're very hard to come by. And the same goes for bust silver. I've only been able to put 2 of those in my pouch in 20 years. That site seems to have a long span of occupancy, so no telling what might pop up next. Good luck!

What's not to luv about finding all those keepers in frozen ground . Your either "The ironman of hardcore diggers" or "out of your tree" or both :laughing7: IMHO

1600's the Dutch lead seal stole the show from the coins 8-)

According to my extensive knowledge of local history , those lead relics were lost by Dutch settlers ! lol that's a winner Vino
