Looked in the button bible, only one that looked like it, and it's a New Jersey national guard button. Circa 1869... Any other suggestions?? That's about it, other than a tax token.

Post this on "What is it?" please. My concern is that it'll get buried in "Today's Finds" before it gets identified, and I think it might be something really good. Never seen anything like that before. Diameter?

It is not a button. It is a broken center disc to a two piece belt plate. Circa 1850's. I have dug a similar complete tongue in a western site. This style turns up with some regularity in western sites. It is stamped brass and they did not how up well which is why they are often broken. The are sometimes incorrectly called 'sash plates' or'sash buckles'. But this is untrue. They were worn like regular belts. Usually they were on a cloth belt but I have seen ones on period leather. Nice find. Go back and look for the rest.

Ps. This motif is a patriotic motif that was also popular in the New York and New Jersey areas. But like I mentioned this was marketed to civilian markets and at least one business brought in a shipment out west. These plates were made in a variety of styles to include clipper ships, stars, different eagles, etc. I have a speciality book not available to the public with a pic of what yours looked like complete. I will upload a photo next week unless some other member does it be for then. Nice find.

Awesome. I'll get the diameter ASAP. I was wondering because it's about the circumference of a dollar piece. Cool!! Waitin to see the pics. Ill also post in what is it this afternoon. Thanks y'all. This field has wielded stuff for a long time. Few house sites, an possibly a camp site. Dad found a cs square belt buckle there, an a few block I buttons. Plus much more relics
