I had exactly an hour to hunt this evening but really only needed two minutes. First find of the hour was the real keeper! I went back to the area where I found the large trade axe and found that the farmer was cutting more hay. We chatted for a bit and he pointed out where the foundations had been when they were plowed under. The site is still covered with hay and it will be another week before he gets to that particular spot so I started hunted the areas that were clear. I've determined that there are finds from all eras in this field.

First target was the remains of a 22 cal. pistol! I am by no means an expert so if anyone knows the make and age of this piece I would be happy to know. I also picked up a mystery copper which I am still checking into...foreign by the looks of it. Thanks for looking.

Update: Identified as an 1875 Colt Open Top Pocket Revolver!

Wow - must have missed this - cool find, we get very few gun related items :(

Gun parts are one of my favorite type of find. This is the closest I've come to finding a whole piece.

I love the description...

"Made 1871 to 1877 these were favorites of gentlemen, ladies and gamblers - Haha :icon_pirat:

Mine's not quite as ornate but the same model, definitely a "gambler's" gun.

I didn't mention it before, but that is always something I thought one day one of us would dig, but to this point they have all been toys. That's the type of find you want to dig in the woods at 2' +. Even an older intact gun could be possible there.

I'm thinking that a lot of the gun was steel...as evidenced by the remaining rusted steel on this one. I did find another piece in the same hole that may be part of the cylinder pivot but I've got to clean it up. The trigger assembly is definitely steel.

The frame survived because they were brass. Some were simply polished brass and the fancy models were nickle plated but still brass under the plating. Almost all of the early revolvers wore out quickly due to poor heat treating of the parts and the whole gun may have never been lost in the spot where you found yours. It may have been dissasembled for parts years ago. I do see remains of the steel trigger but it's extremely unlikely the hammer, cylinder, barrel, etc rusted away to nothing. There should be something still attatched if it was whole when it was lost. Back when Ebay still allowed gun parts there were piles of old revolver bits for sale cheap. The "top break" type that broke open like a shotgun to load were the most common in the late 1800s.

He is thin now compared to 6 years ago so hitting him with your shovel should be enough. If only it was as easy as stepping on a punk like the PA Colonial bros. ;D

Just use the cut out of the picture. ;D

Great looking gun in it's day though, there should be a good chance of the other half is down the plow line. :icon_thumright:
