I had about 4 hours to kill this afternoon so I head over to the farmhouse property where I dug the 1943 Walker half and silver pocket watch cover last month. I wasn't too successful out the the soybean fields or the collard patch, so I headed to the front yard. Not expecting to find much since I've been over it a few times already, I finally found a few keepers. The three keepers were all found within 30 minutes just before I was going to head home.
I had a great signal by some boxwoods and could tell it was a deep sweet signal. Just as I dug the plug my cell phone rang. :dontknow: It was my long lost Tnet buddy Andy (DD-777) on the other end. I told him I had just dug a silver quarter with a flying eagle on the back, but was unsure what it was. Of course he thought I was full of crappe'. :tongue3: I told him he was my good luck charm. After a bit of chit chat I grabbed my cameras and headed back to the plug to see what exactly it was. All I could see as far as the date was a "3". After checking my Red Book I found out I had dug a 1923 SLQ. This is my oldest coin so far from this property. :hello2:
Here's a video to enjoy:

Once I had pictures of the SLQ I was pumped to stay and find more. ;D Within minutes I has some sort of oval tag that all I could read was "Employee" on the front. I was hoping it was a chauffeurs license, but that was not to be. :(
After that I dug a bracelet about 20' away. With those three items in my pouch I called it a day.

*1923 SLQ

*"Employee 1400 Naval Air Station Norfolk, Va" tag
Any idea what this tag would have been used for or how old it may be?

*Bracelet says "Ralph Boyd Smith" on the front and "Love Elva" on the back

*Possible arrowhead?
Is this an arrowhead?

*Asst'd other goodies.

Thanks for looking,
MM

MM, you made a nice haul. Isn't it funny how (in most cases) that you dig coins or relics when you first get to a site or as you leave? Nice coin. I think Elva is one of Dman's many former girlfriends-LOL. WTG, Q.
Elva is a pig and she still wouldn't date you and she's not real picky. By the way really nice finds. I like the quarter.

What am I going to do with you two? :dontknow: I'll be sure to bring the boxing gloves when we detect. :violent1:
By the way, Elva won't be dating anyone anymore. I'm cooking her for breakfast this morning. She was turned into bacon after all of the rejection. :tongue3:

Nice post Doug.. That bracelet looks silver or silver plated. The Norfolk tag was probably something that all civilian employees were required to wear, looks pretty old, 40's-50's maybe? The air station is still there and operational :icon_thumleft:

Thanks Jeff.
The bracelet is plated for sure. I've had a few pieces come off already. There is some sort of goldish colored clear top coat over the silver.
I was thinking the same thing on the Norfolk tag. Looks fairly old.
Have a great week,
Doug

Nice SLQ. It is amazing how these coins wear. Most of what I find are dateless. Congrats on your finds.

The tag is a tool crib tag. You work in a shop or factory. You need a special tool to do a job. Say a delicate measuring instrument or a very odd wrench that a normal mechanic wouldn't have in his personal too box. You go to the tool crib and ask for that item. The tool crib clerk hands over the tool and you hand over your tag. The tag goes in the bin or on the board where the tool is kept. You don't come back with the tool, they know who got it and track you down to get it back.

Very common item and procedure in machine shops, factories and other places where there are mechanics, machinists working. A worker would have a half dozen or so of these tags so he could requisition more than one tool at a time.

TH,
I agree. I thought it was strange to see the other three digits of the date totally gone, but the "3" remained. :icon_scratch:

CTG,
Fantastic info on the tag. :icon_thumleft: Thanks for posting that.

Not yet. I tried a Google search but with the last name of "Smith" you can imagine the results. :-\
I was also wondering what the numbers on the tag were for, and also why the "4's" were engraved sideways. :dontknow:

Doug,
You got a guy that worked in a machine shop or factory of some kind at NAS Norfolk. He got that bracelet. Went to the tool crib and handed over his tag for a set of stamps. They are kept in a block of wood with holes drilled in it and in alphabetical and numerical order. You can tell that the letters and numbers were individually stamped because of how uneven they were. Not a professional engraving job.

He likely grabbed the 4 out of the set, looked at it to make sure he had the right number, turned it business end down and whacked it with a hammer in both spots. Between looking at the 4 upside down and backwards on the stamp and then turning it down to use he mis oriented it. Struck both numbers and then looked at what he had done. Said, "Oh XXXX", it was too late then to do anything about it. Been there done that, how I know.

I guess it could have been the other way round. Elva may have been the one working at NSA Norfolk. Good ol' Elva may have made the mistake. Lots of women worked in the war plants while husband was off fighting.

8) :o Wow, MM! You didn't say anything about the tag and the bracelet yesterday! :icon_pirat: You ended up with a great hunt! I went Friday for a couple of hours. Made my way thru privet and vines with nothing to show for it. Walking back to the truck I found one lowly 1924 Buffalo nickel. :P :D Congrats on all those finds and always love the videos!
