The difference in dates is pretty obvious once you've seen a few of both types. I'll try to put up a picture later.

As to copper vs. zinc with plating, the only way to tell those is to weight them. The zinc weight in at 2.5 - 2.6 grams; the copper ones weigh in around 3.1 grams.

Some people can hear a tone difference between a copper and a zinc cent when flipped. The copper "rings" louder and clearer than zinc, which hardly rings at all.

The ability to detect this varies from person to person, but it's worth a try.
