Any Spanish silver has been on my wish list since I got serious into detecting 6 years ago. I have found old silver overseas but I wanted to find some old silver here in the states. I am attending a class at Shaw Air Force Base in SC and was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of historical markers while driving around the local area. I was looking for some civil war relics when this little silver coin came out of the ground. I thought nice, a silver dime and then I looked at the coin and was in disbelief . 1785! The reale has been holed but that adds character . I guess this is a half reale being so small. I also found a civil war pistol bullet ,first one of those that I have dug in a while. :headbang: The bad thing is that I have to leave tomorrow ,drive to Norfolk Va. catch a plane and go overseas for 6 months. For the birds..
Shaw AFB is about 3 hours from where I live so I may take a weekend trip back down this way when I get back.
Sorry ,the camera don't want to work with me on close ups..Thanks for looking and happy hunting. :icon_thumright:

Very nice I can remember the feeling like it was yesterday! Very nice find!! I am going in the Army soon and hope to be able to detect some here and there. Are you in the service? Just assuming you are by the sounds of your post.

That is the same date as my first spanish 1/2 reale find as well, although mine was worn almost smooth. Congrats on a great find!

etracjoe ,I am in the AF . All branches have good and bad points. I think if I could do it over I would go in the Coast Guard that way you are always stationed on the water and they are real tight nit. The Army has some good bases overseas as does the AF. Hunting in Europe will spoil you real quick. Germany has several Army bases and there are tons of good places to hunt there. Lots of Napoleonic ,roman and WW2 stuff to dig.

That's great getting your first Spanish (and I'm guessing your first 1700's coin). If you hunt in South Carolina though, IT WOULN"T BE YOUR LAST :headbang:

Sweet!! I just found my second one ever last weekend here: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,397753.0.html

There is a mintmark on the back of yours that will determine where it was minted. (Use the macro settings on you camera for close ups...it is the tulip icon. Nearly all cameras nowadays have a macro mode, you just need to find it!)

Congratulations!
