ELYSBURG — If only the “Man of Steel” had really been able to save Centralia.
Twenty-five years ago, the borough known worldwide for its underground mine fire was the subject of Action Comics’ “Superman.” It would be the first of two editions where Centralia — named “Coaltown” in the comic — would be featured.
Former Mayor Ann Marie Devine wishes, like thousands of others, that Superman — if not the federal government — could have saved their beloved town, but she did develop a long-term friendship with the artist and writer of the comic, and some of the original artwork from the two editions still hangs in her Elysburg home.
