it very well could be a 2 reale would be 27mm

To me the coin looks alot like a dug button with the way it cleaned up. The dark/black areas look like the remains of GILT. A copper counterfeit would have to be silver gilt to pass it off as real.....right:dontknow:

Could be ctft, but also could be a decorative button. There were both buttons and cufflinks modeled on spanish reales.

this definitely a coin

Sometimes I wonder if copper coins are all my detector picks up. I have about 30+ old british coppers with the oldest being from 1753. Congrats on your find, whatever it is. The year makes it cool, valuable or not.

The big question is could it be some other coin say like a pence of some sort or is it my first cftc
i know the 4 Maravedis looks the same on the front but only measures 25mm

Congratulations Frank - Whatever it is!

Hi Frank, We're still "digging out" here after Sandy. Nice coin! Did the Spanish make pence coins or this that strictly an English term? Looks like a "Real," but I'm not sure of the size and value of the copper coins at the time. If you have a date it should be pretty easy with Google to find out what types of coins were minted in that year by the Spaniards. I found a Maravedis cob once, but it's much older than that "coin" and yours is not a cob coin. I suppose it could be a counterfeit Real coin if it were silver plated. I suppose you need to try and bring out some more of the detail with bees wax. Regardless it's a very nice find! :icon_thumright:

yes the spanish had copper pence or should i say a 1/7 pench coin
i have not found any coin other then the 2 reale that looks exactly like this

It seemed the Maravedi in this timeframe didn't have the shield on the obverse of the coin as far as I can tell -- that should eventually id the coin as real or not. I have a good reference on Spanish coins somewhere and will take a look. Can you try a pencil tracing of the coin to try and show more detail? My guess at this point would be counterfeit, but you should be able to still see some minute traces of silver coating on the coin with a jeweler's loupe one would think.
