Hello everyone, I was able to go out on a landscape job today thanks to craigslist, this was no ordinary day for I was able to get detecting and panning right for an entire week on 50 acres of land in Ouray which includes a hundred year old cabin and stream, I found some nice samples from where I was at. Pics are included. A lot of pyrite but you never know, anyone know how i can make sure please fill me in.

...clip... A lot of pyrite but you never know, anyone know how i can make sure please fill me in.
Way to go finding a new spot to hunt! About pyrite, it is brittle while gold is malleable...this should help in telling the real from the fake.

good luck,
cc

Check out Arizona Gold Prospectors. I'll try and attach the link, but I don't know if they allow that.

As mentioned pyrite is brittle. I've also found it has a bit of a greenish tint to it where gold is more typically yellow. There's no mistaking gold once you've found it for the first time. I've always found when others are questioning if something is gold...and this includes myself until I found my first...it's usually not gold. I've never found any gold from flour gold to nuggets that I didn't know immediately it was the real thing. From the photos, my guess would be pyrite...I see the greenish cast to it rather than the yellow and it appears to have the crystaline structure more typical of pyrite.
