Half of the tree was missing and half hollow with decayed wood inside
Big enough to set in it.
I spent at least 5 minuets looking for the first coin and finally grabbed a few hand fulls of twigs and leaves and i finely found it.
I found 5 Lincoln cents 1 1913 Barber Dime and a 1918 Buffalo Nickel . The gold thing was on the other side of the tree.
The shot Quarter was the first coin. wish 007.JPGwish 011.JPGwish 015.JPGwish 018.JPGwish 019.JPGwish 022.JPGwish 022.JPGwish 008.JPGwish 001.jpgwish 003.JPGwish 002.JPGwish 005.JPGwish 006.JPGwish 004.JPG
All these coins except the shot Quarter were inside of wood bark. The 1918 Buffalo Nickel was inside 2 pieces of wood. I was really supprised to see that when i pulled it open.
The wheats are 2-1920's a1914,1917 and a no date. These coins could have been there since 1920 almost 96 years just a guess. :hello2:

Amazing! Never heard a story like that before. Very interesting. Congrats on your great finds. ~Lisa & John

Does this mean I need to check inside tree stumps and dig the wood when I get that signal.....Cool. I found a slug in a tree branch once when my detector went off on it.

Great story I always check for coins and gold around big trees Sweet finds Thanks for sharing!!!!!!

How unusual. The way those coins were embedded in the bark brings to mind something akin to the Philadelphia Experiment taking place there long ago. Or more likely the coins were for one reason or another hammered into the tree, for whatever reason. Or perhaps the tree naturally enveloped the coins.

bullet holes 001.JPGThanks for the replies.
I've herd about coins pounded into trees before and this is the first time i have found any thing like it.
A neat find for me. You just never know what you'll find out in the woods and along the river banks.
The shot quarter makes number 8 shot coins so far and i save them all.
