Very nice larson. Is that a lug handle right under the series of cut marks or is it a face effigy?

Re: a complete pot, Mandan culture

OK thanks,
this washed out of a steep bank after a heavy rain on my land
I actually think I could have found ALL of the pieces if I had known from the start what I ran across
I feel very lucky to have found this
can you see the owl faces on the side in two of the images?
I found a couple other rim pieces with owl faces on them
my wife does not like the owl pieces because an owl has a bad meaning to the sioux and cheyenne
I don't think the crow like them either
I have quite a few friends from the sioux, cheyenne, and crow nations
also have some cree nation friends from Canada just north of the dakotas and montana
I feel very lucky to have so many native friends
I forgot about my french canadian friends, the Ojibwa, or as the white people call them, the Chippewa

The owls are upside down.
The tips of the wings are the v's to the left and the right, and the dots are the breast and underside of the wings.

At least that's what I'm seeing.
Nice pot Larson.

Truly a great find! Pottery sherds are extremely abundant on village sites in the Dakotas, but I bet less than 200 (?) complete or nearly complete vessels have been found.

Good thing you found it when you did... I would imagine that it could have been destroyed if you didn't find it soon after it eroded from the bank...

Cool owl faces too...thanks!

Larson, what a great, great find. I would put finding something like that up there with finding a Clovis. (for me anyway)
You post some amazing finds. I dont get to comment nearly enough as on them, but I should because they are great, and some very rare.
I think SO ILL might be on to something, cause I can see the owls being upside down also. I can really see them both ways, but upside down it seems like i can see more of the bird. AS far as dating it, i bet Matt could get you in the ball park. I'd P.M him and ask for his opinion.
Thanks for the look, you have a wonderful spot on your hands. I lovd the bone birds also. Take care.
John
