Kind of a crazy couple of days- first I find this whole LC just swinging in the woods about 8" down. Then I found out the cut one the next day in a completely different area. Wish it had the half with the date but it looks to be from the same era. I found

the cut one right near I found a musket ball a couple of years ago.

Thanks its my first draped - oh and this is the back...doesn't look too promising. Sand is pretty bonded to it.

I'm stunned at how gorgeous the obverse is - there may yet be a safe solution to clearing up the reverse - take your time , some
very experienced copper coin guys/gals -will chime in to help you no doubt ! Great find !

First, a very nice LC. I have an 1802 myself. I've cleaned a good amount of old coppers and the the only thing I don't clean is that mixture of sand and corrosion. I had it on an 1838 so I experimented. Never could get it off even with peroxide bath, and the natural method. Electrolysis may but it's not my personal choice. In my opinion she looks beautiful and I wouldn't touch it. Everyone wants a perfect coin but that's rare. Taking the corrosion off the one side may damage the good side anyway.

Congrats on your first and 2nd LC

The front of the large cent is way above average. The back, oh well. Nice coin and I'd be glad to find one any day.

Good finds, DonKarlos. Try the freeze/thaw method on that crusty one. Use dry ice if you can get it, or if you know a knifemaker - maybe some liquid nitrogen. The shock of rapid freezing/warming will crack that stuff right off.

Thanks a lot everybody. If I could just find one LC a year I'd be happy so the cut one was a great surprise as well. I think I'm happy enough with the front detail that I don't want to clean the back. I already tried peroxide prior to the pictures. Probably just some light mineral oil and I'll be done.
