Got out to an old school site for a couple hours this morning and found my oldest readable date coin, its an 1847 large cent, i also found a no date Shield nickle, the fertilizer just kills these old coins. They quit making the shield nickle in 1883. This spot might have some potential!!

Fantastic, Mace! I never seem to find anything that old and I know they're around. I must not dig enough of the deeper targets. I get frustrated after digging a lot of trash and end up just digging the loud, short, sweet signals that I can pinpoint down to a coin sized target. I know that's what I'm doing wrong and tell myself I'm not going to do it that way this time but my determination wanes after the first half hour of trash targets. Congrats on those coins! I'm envious!

I use a Whites XLT detector and both of these coins were 3 inches deep in a bean field where an old country school sat. Its amazing how much stuff gets moved around when they plow.

How many graduating classes have they been through sitting in the ground all of that time? Pretty cool Mace!

Cool! I might have to look into buying one of these metal detecting apparatuses... :headbang:
