Picked up this oil painting today at a church bazzaar sale today. Normally, I look to see if the artist is listed before I buy it. But I saw the auction tag on its back and figured take a chance. The price was make an offer. I said $8 and the table worker said sure. Oops, I had only $6 left in my pocket after buying some costume jewelry. I offered to make up the difference in coins but the seller said just give me the $6. Fine by me.
The tag was from a Salmgundi Club auction in 2004.
The Salmagundi Club, one of the oldest art organizations in the United State was founded in 1871 in the Greenwich Village section of Manhattan, New York City. Since 1917 it has been located at 47 Fifth Avenue. As of 2014, its membership roster totals roughly 900 members.
The artist is Robert Armetta and titled Summer Southhampton. I guess it has a minimum value now but might appreciate in years to come. Who knows Mayber my great grandchild will have it appraised on Antiques Roadshow in 2103 and be pleasantly surprised.
