Great to be able to post stuff like this here, so my thanks to the moderators for setting up this forum. Since I'm getting ready to take a bunch of photos of colonial buckles for my book, thought I'd make a quick post to show some of my recoveries over the years. Hard to see many of the nice individual examples, but I thought it would be cool to see them all piled up together. BTW - this file is large so you can click a couple of times to zoom to see more detail.

Amazing Bill! I zoomed in and looked all around at those early buckles I dream of digging one day.

Is that a makers mark on the tongue of this buckle in the wooden case?

The box on the right has very early buckles in it, last quarter of the 17th century to 1st quarter of the 18th. With one exception which is the big one - a Revolutionary War standard sling buckle. Those are HARD to find.

There are plenty of early ones in some of the other boxes too but they're just too hard to see. And some date to the mid-1600s. After I take some group photos of the big pile I'll start separating them out so you can see a little better what's there. Thanks for looking ....

You are the colonial buckle king Mr. Bill D. Have you ever found a large heart knop buckle? I have found the small ones but this one is at least twice the size of the typical spectacle type. Sadly its broken. But at least I got both parts. Not so sure they are hearts, just that they resemble the smaller ones.

I don't believe I've found any of that style Gary. They must be rather hard to come by as even my buckle reference book doesn't show any examples like yours. Too bad yours was mangled by the plow.
