I have been under the weather for a couple weeks, but managed to get out 3 times metal detecting at a site very close to my home, that has produced numerous colonial and Federal/US coinage over the past 30 years. I got three coins on those three hunts, one each hunt and all three are 1700 era coinage.

A 1798 Large Cent, a 1775 Half Real and this morning I got my bonus coin, a nice 1786 New Jersey.
I found this one not ten feet from where I found my only cut in half NJ copper back in 2002. That was variety ID to be a Maris 59-o.

So today this was my 22nd ground found NJ copper, 7th in the past two years, just love this hobby............

Included photos of the NJ, the Half Real and a beautiful Tombac button (circa 1770-90s) with a nice sunburst design.

This 1786 Maris 16-L variety (Very Common) is one of the best of the 22 New Jersey coppers I have found for condition. Funny, the 1798 found at the same site is nowhere near as nice.

very nice!!! congrats

your very lucky to have the history to hunt old coins like that just minutes from your home, any CW relic or coin when this country was just started must really get the blood pumping, sweet grounds and nice hunt!!!

Beauty of a dug copper, congrats on your best.
Nice button too.

Wow! Unbelievable condition. Wish mine came out like that. lol I also found 2 buttons similar, but without the sunburst in the middle. Same design on the outside though. Congrats to you!

Nice finds for sure Don, the copper looks like it is off centre, great find. HH

Congrats, that NJ copper is in beautiful condition!!! So much detail left, just awesome!!!!!

Good 1 Don! Congrats...............Hogge

Can't ask for much better than that. Such a great patina and to think there's some that would probably have stripped it away.

Great looking coin Don! The off center strike makes it look even more old and primative.

Don't forget to add it to your NJ Copper survey :icon_study:

I want to show that the coin did not come out of the ground like my original photos show, so here is a combined photo of the coin as found and then after half hour of soaking in hot peroxide and wiping off the loose dirt crud. I could have gone further with the dirt removal, but leaving the recessed areas as is brought out great relief of the high areas. I soaked in warm distilled water for about an hour after the peroxide bath and than dried thoroughly under a desk lamp.
