After reading the pros and cons of coil covers, I just cleaned mine out. I have only done this a few times in two years and was shocked. The small amount of dust and sand that came out was not much however, I ran a magnet over the dust pile and the magnet collected a bunch of micro material twice! On occasion, I will receive a nice signal, dig and lose the signal. I have always contributed this to having my sensitivity set too high running in all metal mode but maybe enough of those micro metal pieces have also played a role in falsing. 20 years detecting and still learning. Yes you have to keep the magnitite out of the cover. I used to seal the crack with silicone sealant thinking I was ok, but a fine crack in the seal happened to suck in more black sand and mess things up. Marine Epoxy is the only sure method of protecting the coil.
