The landowner said it was OK to hunt this field after the crops were up so I headed back to rehunt the spot where I had found a couple of LCs and CW buttons on earlier hunts.
The soil had been tilled a little and most of the old cornstalks eliminated so it was easy hunting. I just hunted between the rows being careful not to damage any corn.
I spent the last two afternoons there and it payed off. The LC is in about the best shape of any I have found. It cleaned up nice with just a toothbrush and Ultrabrite.
No backmark left on the infantry button.
The large brass buckle next to the heart harness buckle cover is a mystery.
No marks of any kind on it. It looks old but not sure how old.
Thanks for looking and best luck to all. Merf

Thank you much for the ID, Buckles--   ---I am shocked.
I never expected to find something that old in this area.
The spot I found that at is next to one of the oldest roads on the platt maps.
It only shows a house----Might have been a tavern or store.
The house was there on the 1881 platt map but gone on the 1892 platt map.
Had to be about the oldest pub in the county.

That's a HECK of a find, Merf.  Any colonial hunter would be PROUD to have that buckle in their collection.  I venture to say that the tavern might've even been long gone by the 1880's...so some patterns through those fields might yield an iron patch that isn't marked...but I think that buckle is a fantastic clue.

Regards,

Buckleboy

Wow Merf great detecting as usual! Love the Civil War buttons and Bat Wing buckle. If I remember right , the Bat Wing buckles are from Mid 1700's to early 1800's. I have only dug one myself. Keep up the good work, I enjoy your posts and photos.

Merf,
I see you aren't letting that detector gather dust. ;D Great finds as usual.
I saw Danimal dig a heart shaped buckle like yours.
