:hello: I managed to sneak away yesterday for a little while. It had been raining here in the Carolina's for about a week. I got in my truck and began my 20 minute drive east. The fall colors of the trees are magnificent this time of year here in the Smokey Mountains. I arrived at my spot and fired up the trusty Etrac as I began my "gridding" ritual. I swept slow and even. Digging many iron targets from the ground placing them in my rubbish bag. The ground was soaked and already, I had accumulated 5 lbs of clay on each shoe. Wet red clay is no fun! :D I spent the day just relaxing, watching and listening to the wildlife. Wild turkeys gobbling in the morning and even a few deer grazing in the same field I was detecting. It's funny, the deer never mind me detecting but, when hunting season comes around...they know. Yesterday I had found 3 large(Navy??)13 stars..Civil war??? Buttons. D Evans. (Attelboro falls)There was no missing these! Below are a few pics of my day. A Revolutionary war "skirmish was fought very close by with a scar of a fallen "militia" Officer.Mind you, this stone is in the "bush" all by itself 3 miles in. Someone takes good care of Mr. Francis's resting spot. Obviously, the stone isn't the original. The original is sill visible in the last photo. The tree is an enormous Poplar Near the fallen officer. HHHH

Re: After the rain

Those buttons are actually Marine Corps buttons ...pre- globe and anchor style. I forget exactly when the style changed but the style you have there was used during the Civil War.

There could be a good relic or three in that heap o' iron.

I was going to say those eagle buttons with bent neck are WWI era. I found a small one in the woods one day, isolated find with nothing else around it. Very cool, though. :icon_thumright:

Great finds and pictures. I don't know how good your printer is, but have you considered printing out some of those beautiful pics to keep with these finds?

Maybe you and I can figure out a way to get through to the newbies on Tnet... not to just throw finds in a box and forget where they're from.

Really nice photos! Its PROBABLY the United Daughters of the American Revolution that have kept up his tombstone and burial spot. I know that the Sons of Confederate Veterans does the same for Confederate soldiers that are buried throughout the country. I have presided over several ceremonies where we have placed a new headstone on Confederate soldiers' graves out in the woods, in the middle of fields, and sometimes just new headstones in the cemeteries.

Congrats on the buttons & CW relics there.
What is that shiny (silver) piece under the toe tap? ??? Coin, or reflection off of a button?
