Have you tried to research DeSoto's travels and why would he have carried
treasure along to bury?

There is an old Spanish Fort located on The Chattahoochee River just south of present day Cottonton, Alabama. A treasure story is related to it and is possible but I have my doubts. The fort area is on private property and the only ones allowed in there is a local Archy club. Any treasure was probably the placer gold from the river.

Other places in the area are much better digging, relics and Indian Artifacts mainly, but be careful as most are claimed by local clubs. I worked the area pretty hard in the early 90s but became known to the point that if my truck was spotted on the road they'd actually follow me around. The old pioneer trail is watched like a hawk (the local sheriff whose Trail Club claimed it, once politely informed me that it would be ashame if he had to arrest the father of his sons best friend so I stopped digging it....lol) and oh yea, the MPs on Fort Benning have no since of humor at all. Good Luck.
