Good After noon all, Long Story but what the heck!! If you want to know about the Dig itself skip to the bottom couple of paragraphs

Anyways I spent a couple hrs at this old park I have done good at in the past with a Gold chain, a few silvers, buffs and the normal clad.

Today I was there about 45 minutes when who shows up? you guessed it the police, He proceeds to tell me that one of the workers from the park district called and said I was vandalizing the park?????? He proceeded to tell me it was against the rules to metal detect there.

I was polite with him and asked him if he had ever read the cities regulations for parks? He said no, I politely told him I had and it says nothing about metal detecting being illegal. I then told him I actually had permission from Gene the head parks worker. He was surprised and looked confused at this point. I then asked him if he could point out where I had "Vandalized" the park? I told him that I had dug no less than 30 holes with in 50' of us. He looked around and said he didn't see anything but that I had to leave.

At this point I was frustrated. I told him so all while being very respectful. I said I would leave but I was doing nothing wrong, I checked regulations, I had permission even though technically I did not need any since I was within the rules. And I asked him if he wanted all the trash I had been picking up along the way? He looked down at all the trash in my bag and you could tell he really felt like he was in a odd spot, He knew I did nothing wrong.

I asked him how he determines when something had been vandalized and asked him wouldn't you have some evidence of the said vandalism before you remove someone for Vandalism?

Right about then I saw the Lead parks guy "Gene" I had permission from and waved him over. He immediately told the Cop I was fine and wanted his half of the finds :) The officer was happy with Gene Saying I was good and then proceeded to tell me he was sorry and hates going on calls like this. He told me to have fun and told me the shift he always works and said he would not be back if called again.. I did thank him and let him know my frustration was not directed towards him just the situation. He agreed and left, Nice guy.

So anyways on to the good stuff. About 30 minutes after the shakedown I got a signal on the ctx that sounded great but the FE was a little high for a 5 inch target. most of the time if it shows that depth and the FE is 18 to 19 like this was I pass. But it was consistent on the tone all the way around so digging away I went. I dug and got a signal with the pin-pointer in the bottom side of the hole, I instantly thought damn bent nail..lol Popped another little chunk out of the hole to find my nail and BOOM there was a silver rim. I cleaned it off and I saw a very worn "ONE DIME" Flipped it over and Saw the worn barber dime face. But Heck it was a 1892 and in CA, We don't see them that old too much!!!! First year barber.. SO happy but oh so close to a seated!!! It is a 1892 S dime. Can't see the "S" very well but it is there. I looked for friends and got another signal!! Then I found why it pinpointed off and had HI FE, the head of a Square nail was laying in the bottom..

I dug a wheat and a Buff and some bling. Then Packed it up and went home with a Smile on my Face with my oldest silver yet!!

My hubs was gold panning at a river over the hill and the police officers approached him and told him some guy called in that he was running a gasoline engine off a boat .. So they were looking for a boat. He told them no boats, then the officers proceeded to ask him what he was doing and he told them. They were there for an hour talking to him about gold panning and dredging in the river. My hubs was very polite and showed them the way to pan and then started up the dredge. The officers said you cannot hear that from the highway overhead and DHubs agreed. So they stayed another hour and had the Sargent come out there to investigate, they all stood around talking to my hubs about gold panning and dredging-how much did it cost? was metal detecting better etc?? The police see him now (due to our personalized plates) on that river know its him and always stop by to learn some more about gold panning. DHubs has even given them the home phone number to call and they can go on our claims with DHubs. Its nice to know there are some good police officers out there who want to know about gold panning and dredging, metal detecting as well.

I had a situation similar to yours in a field across a street from a cemetery where I asked the head of the cemetery maintenance if it would be ok to hit the field he said ok . But someone called the law the cop said people called saying I was in the graveyard which I was not !! Once I explained myself the cop said have a good day shook my hand and was off . Two weeks later there was a front page story on me metal detecting in the cemetery LOL ! All I found was a 1899 Indian head for my headache

REPORTERS refuse to tell the truth. You want a laugh? AS LONG as you don't believe most of it you can Google Port Huron Bomb or read this:

All-clear from bomb squad after WWI bomb was found by diver & taken to Port Huron police department - WXYZ.com

And if ANYONE on here BELIEVES I drove around with bombs in my truck that I had no idea if they were live or not, I also have a bridge for sale cheap.

Reporters and Police are two totally different things.

Any cop who feels the need to harass someone metal detecting shouldn't be a cop, period. This country is full of thieves, rapists, drug dealers and killers who are roaming around in our neighborhoods. Time spent harassing a digger is time taken away from catching the real criminals. A good cop knows that and won't waste his time on the petty stuff. Just my take on it...

He looked around and said he didn't see anything but that I had to leave.

I'm all for cops, but it really burns me when they don't actually know certain laws and can't offer anything other than 'because I said so'. Once had a small town cop stop me on my motorcycle because he didn't think my passenger had proper eye protection and forced me to give mine to my passenger which in my mind was ridiculous and put us both in danger. When I quoted the section from the Oklahoma drivers manual, he told me I was getting smart with him. Typical 'boy, you're in a heap of trouble' type cop like you see in movies.

Well done on keeping your composure, glad to hear the situation was defused when the groundskeeper showed up. Maybe someone else who detects there called in a complaint to try to chase you away??

And it's also good to see you were rewarded for your patience with a nice piece of silver.

Great story like the way you handled that situation and came out with silver in the end too!
Someone should invent a detector that fits in the bottom of a shoe so we can walk over targets and not have anything visible. Then we can dig more covertly. 8-)

UMM with the fire department closing the streets, Cops everywhere, not one but three helicopters overhead. They made a fiasco out of it. I TOLD them that the state police had already examined them and said they were harmless. I just wanted some paperwork to be able to prove it. The city police didn't believe me so they had fun with it. What was the best part is the SAME state police Sgt that saw the first one came out and told them they were already examined. The chief of police told him he didn't want them in his city. The state police sgt said I had every right to have them. I got them all back.

I told the news the truth. Was it published? NO. They went on all the TV news channels and in the Detroit and local paper and made it look like I was an idiot driving potentially live bombs around. Well I now own 5 of the critters. 1916 Mark 1 bombs. First bombs ever dropped from biplanes.

I have had plenty of fun with police departments. ALL over Michigan. I am sure I will have more fun. I will however NEVER talk to the news again. They print only LIES.

That's some awesome ordinance there. Definitely some conversation pieces. My uncle who is a retired navy UDT seal has several inert pieces of ordinance he has displayed at home. He had a buddy who was a local news anchor over for dinner one night and the dude about crapped his pants when he saw them. The poor dude legitimately thought my uncle was planning on blowing him up. I still think it's sad all the civil war relics being found on the beaches and local residential areas that get demo'd cause they are too afraid to remove the danger and save local history. I like to blow things up but what's cooler to me is saving history for my kids later on. Great job on recovering them rounds. Others I'm sure won't be so lucky if left out in the water for much longer.
