I returned to the field I had been hunting earlier in the week. For two days of hunting, I ended up with a variety of old coins and miscellaneous items. I believe I have located the site of a ghost town that disappeared in the 1870s due to the age of the coins. I found no Indians, wheats, or silver in the area. The soil was littered with deep iron at 6 to 12 inches. I will return in search of more old coins! Hopefully silver. The descriptions are in a photo. Most of the day was cold and windy. I was also digging through frozen ground. I can't wait until next year!

The large cents range from 1830s to 1850s.
My first flying eagle!
My first Canada bank token.
The 2 cent is in spectacular condition.
I believe the button is from the 1830s.
I was unable to find any information on the store card token, leading me to believe it is an R9 or R10 rarity. Other than the info on the coin, I have no other information. Any other information is greatly appreciated.
The little glass bottle is interesting. I don't know the markings on the bottom.

Altogether 12 coins predating 1872.

Thanks for looking!

Way to go on those great finds and locating a great site! I just dug a 2 center and the condition was incredible as well. That coin looks fantastic. Hope you hammer some silver out of there

Looks like you are in the nectar sector! Beautiful 2 cent piece! Just a matter of time before you start digging seated and capped bust silver. I'm surprised you didn't get more buttons and some suspender clips, but they will show up.

As I've mentioned in earlier threads , it seems every time a two center is found it's in great shape.
But that one is exceptional. Congrats!

Very nice finds! As teverly mentioned, your Roll & Smith CW token is R4. It is also listed as Fuld IND. 460P-1a. In the George Fuld rarity scale r4 means 201-500 known .

Surf: the bottle is 1 inch wide and 1 inch tall (found it because of the metal top), and it's all in one piece.
Thanks for the clarification

63bkpkr: I am going to get maps/info about the area from the county historical society over the winter to prepare for next year! The ground is full of deep iron. No coin newer that 1871 was found. Due to the concentration of the finds, I did not get a chance to walk over more ground. The more I detect in this spot next year, the better idea I'll have of what was there. There were red bricks in the soil, iron nails, and many lantern tops. There was a lot of foot traffic in the mid 1800s. The bricks indicated an old foundation/building. There is no visual evidence from ground up.
Does this answer your question?

Teverly and Thrillathahunt: thanks for information on the store card! You guys rock!

Thanks everyone else. The two cent is by far my best!

Thank you G.I. and yes it does. Nothing like a large cemetery with a church to indicate a nearby population center. Of course the bricks, that spells somebody had money, lantern tops and misc. other items all say lots of people were there at another time. The U.S. Geological Survey group also offers historical maps and they may be downloadable for free.

Best of success to your winter research and that it yields some detailed information as to the layout of the town and maybe outlying ranches. Locating some town records at the historical society might also have some info on nearby ranches.
