Well here it is.
After a lot of pressure from lots of folks who asked about the photo in my avatar.
I found this in 91 or 92.

This is a cache I found while working around the back side of the original homestead house on our property here.
It isn't anywhere near as old as the house,
but it is in a direct line of sight from where the main Kitchen window was in the second farm house built in 1901.

This fruit jar had coins that date from 1916 to 1942
Also a couple seated halves, 1843 and 1858.

The rest were all SLQs, Washingtons, Walkers and LOTS of Mercury Dimes.
There were only 5 Barbers in the group.

Nice find Thom :)- was this by chance? Had you heard a story about it beforehand?

My wife's folks were still living in the newer farm house and I was helping my father in law replace the main water line.
I went up against the homestead and up to the driveway with the trench when I found this one.
There wasn't any Metal detector involved... Just Luck. LOL

I am sure by now you have hit the place with a detector, at least I hope so. Many people had several they would place around.

I have yet to find a cache, but I love hearing about all the ones everyone else find. Thank you for sharing your pics. I am from Central Colorado originally, and I kick myself when I think of all the places I had a chance to hunt but never knew about the hobby. That and panning. I have been to so many old mines during my hiking and climbing days it is silly. Never panned or MD'd a one of them. :-\

Congrats on that great cache!

Are you referring to the ditch I dug to place the water line?

The jar was at 15 inches at the top of the jar, 20 inches at the bottom of the jar.

4 feet for the water line... LOL

While I think about it the lid came off in pieces and the metal bail type closer was almost all gone with rust.

Yes I have hit the whole place with a detector and it payed off .
I was able to pick up several other caches similar to this one that I haven't even photographed yet.

Most were newer than this although one was much older. It was also much smaller.
All were in the same type jar .

See, Thom...that didn't hurt too bad, did it?? :P

We love stories like this especially when there's pictures involved. Do you still have all the coins? Can we see a closeup of the coins? 8)

OK..I'll stop pushing. Thanks for posting this. :) :) :)

This is a GREAT find! I'd love to see photos of the coins, close up. I feel sure that this one will go in the "Best of Tnet" threads with some clearer photos of the coins.

Congratulations, Thom. You deserved to make a find like this.

Everytime I hear about caches like that it reminds me of Vegas Vacation when Clark and Cousin Eddie were trying to dig up the buried jars in Eddie's yard. Funny Stuff ;D

Really cool find. My old farmhouse yard is so full of nails and rusty bits that I would be digging for a month just to clear signals from the first inch.

Sara,

Some times luck has a lot to do with it as well.
Over the years as things have gone through changes there were other things that have turned up.
We still have the original homestead house, and are not allowed to remove it as it is dated back to 1880.
so we use it as tack storage.

But to get a building permit for a new house a couple years ago we had to remove the house built in 1900.
so the opportunities are tremendous for good surface finds as well as other things along old fence lines, as well as the walls and other parts of the main house when we took it down.

as I said before this was not found with a detector but while digging a trench for a water line.

One of the most cool finds so far has been a huge hive of wild bees that took up residence in the wall behind the electrical box on the side of the house.
We had to leave that corner of the house for demolition until cold weather and move it at night as a solid piece just to save the bees.
Now there was an adventure! LOL

Thom,
Thanks for the great post and your BANNER find!!! Whether you found it with or without a detector, it's still one of those once in a lifetime finds. The kind every one of us dreams about.
Great job.

MM,

I missed it in the banner.
But I got a great PM from Marc explaining why it was removed.
The banner is for new finds not old stuff like this.

I'm cool with it. wasn't aiming for the banner, LOL
just wanted to answer the questions a lot of folks had.
It will be a while before I am able to post pics.
I am borrowing this computer because mine has to be repaired before I can figure out how much I have lost.
Jeesh... I sure am glad I backed everything up with disks.

LOL
