Ancient? Bronze or copper possible tin lined, primative markings?

Also, I'm having trouble figuring out if this is a pic of the top or the bottom? :icon_scratch:

I'm thinking it's either Middle Eastern or East Indian in origin, but was it a functional piece or simply a decorative piece.

I would be pretty sure that's from India. It's a traditional design in the hand engraved style of what is sometimes known as "Mughal ware" which comes mostly from central and northern India. Here's a couple of similar vintage examples (also hand engraved), the second pair of which were made to serve as candlesticks:

Dating is difficult but the patina and general appearance of yours suggests its bronze and an earlier example than the brass pieces shown above. That doesn't mean it's ancient though. I would guess late 1800s to early 1900s.
