Re: another great day for Mding

i also found these objects.

the buckle was found at the same location yesterday on a scouting run of the area.
what looks like a chisel, an old lock and a part of what i think is some horse tack (the round buckle you secure the saddle on the horse with)

I think you're on a barn site, from the looks of those finds. Now go find the housesite nearby and get some more goodies!

its funny you mention that. the house is 80' to the south from where i found this stuff and the barn is another 300' past that. the area i found this stuff is around the old well (and yes there is something in the bottom of it but the magnet i had with me wasnt strong enough to pull it up) but i cant find any other signs of any more buildings around the well.

the house on this spot disappeared off the map after 1940 and was there as early as 1860 (that is as early as i can get a good map of the area)to the east of the house about 400' is a small river so there was plenty of water and it is known that the cav came through this area during the cw.

I think the occupants of the house tied their horses up at the well sometimes, or stopped off there themselves for a drink. Well water was better than creek water, because the rocks and soil filtered it--which is why there is sometimes a well very close to a creek in the first place.

No way to know if that stirrup is CW or not, but I think it is a housesite find.

Best Wishes,

Buckles
