Oh NO! get Frodo, it's the ring of Power! no, but really, it is a ring, No? any guess on the type of metal it is made of? any marks? other than the lines and punched holes? Are all the holes round or are some square or other shapes? another picture of it flat on a piece of paper might be helpful too. I assume that your question "any ideas, please" is in regard to what kind of ring, if you give the area of the world where you found it, it might help someone here get you some further information.

Ok, first step, is it attracted to a magnet? to see if it is made of iron.
Second step, does it appear to be complete, no area that looks like something was broken off of it.
Third step, some better pictures and maybe a description of the number of holes and lines on it's surface, as well as diameter and weight.

again the importance of more pictures, in your first picture it looks like there is a portion of the ring, (right side of the photo) where the ring is thicker? is this so or is it just a effect of how the picture was taken

Looks like an old ring to me. Place it in the bottom end of an aluminum can and pour in some vinegar, enough to cover the item. Let is soak for a couple of hours and then rub it with some baking soda. Rinse thoroughly and then take a look at what you have. Maybe a maker's mark somewhere or metal purity stamp?

Poor mans ring, quite a common find in the UK, the holes would have held cheap stones...probably glass. I have quite a large one some were I will see if I can dig it out, usually made of Brass and not very old...18th century.. ish.

Yeah most of us have found junk rings like that. The rhinestones or other junk stones fell out of the setting.
