An area where the town keeps cattle?

Maybe last name? Usually the names have the first initials, like J.E. Pound, but maybe they were not really sure of the owners first initials at time of printing. Maybe it is the dog Pound.

On these maps, people houses are black squares and cemataries are grayish squares so im puzzled by this one.

This is a "Town Pound" - usually located near a common or town center
back then fences were not what they are now - if someone found a stray horse,cow, pig, sheep etc - you brought it here -
usually they look like an above ground cellar hole - 3 or 4 sided - with a wooden fence gate
made of field stones - usually around 4 or 5 feet high - most I have seen are like 20' X 20'
someone was in charge of looking after it and responsible for feeding the animals
if one of your animals ended up here - usually you had to pay a fee to get it back or for feeding or care
for the time it was in there - kind of like a colonial dog pound
there's usually not a lot to be found "in" them - Have found a few coppers and large cents outside
of them - probably dropped during the winter in the snow while trying to pay
