This is one of my finds from my last hunt, with MikeWaz and Twistidd. It was burried about 8 inches and was under a big rock. Its an axe with a hammer on the back side. I found it in the same area that Mike found the Barber dime. I guess an old fur traders bracelet was also found in the same area. Any idea on the age? This is my 3rd axe head I found this year.
Thanks.

It's definitely cooler than the other two you found, and probably a lot older too. Especially if it was that deep, and clearly the wooden handle rotted away long ago. Maybe someone here better schooled in relics can date it. Maybe it was from the fur traders, who knows. Maybe they traded it to the natives...the possibilities are endless. That's what makes those old axeheads interesting. Nice find.

Trade axes have been found in Illinois, but not around here. That doesn't exclude the possibility that they exist, but yours is not one of them. Here's a good site that id's trade axes:

I would like to know what a fur traders bracelet looked like.

But yeah, it's an old axe head alright, most likely dropped before the scout camp took it's place there.

Cool axehead! Are you going to run some electrolysis on it?

I'd hate to carry that around in my pouch though ;)

I always manage to find the heavy stuff (1/4" plate stove lids, horse shoes, etc.) at the BEGINNING of the hunt :P
