Missouri trading company is a good start. Also start with an easier material. I liked dacite when I started. Good luck and buy some band aids.

I tried my fair share at it, I made my own tools and got pretty decent at making points out of the bottom of beer bottles. I have never tried using actual flint of chert I just never decided if I wanted to buy it online to try my hand at it. a very good book to help with this is Flintknapping by John C. Whittaker

I am getting into knapping myself and wondered if anyone on here who hunts points also do any knapping themselves? I am just a beginner by all means and looking for some insight into who you get tools and stone from.

No I have never tried it myself I know I find some cool rocks in the creek that could make some nice ones though. I have people all the time trying to get me to bring them home. I don't have time for that.......heck I am trying to find a real one not a darn rock. I think they should get permission and find their own just like Im doing looking for points.

Thanks for the responses and PM's I look forward to learning this ancient craft. I will post some of my efforts when I get that far.
KingsKid, Knapping is the using of tools to make arrowheads, spear points, knives, etc from chert, flint, obsidian and other substrates that will fracture in a conchoidal pattern to flake to a certain shape. Did I do the definition justice guys?

I have hunted and collected points and tools for many years, and have always wanted to learn to make my own and have just gotten to a point where I can devote the time.

Well they are getting harder to find in nature. Make some you can enjoy just please put your maker mark on them.

Here's a nice example of a Clovis point knapped of Ohio flint ridge material a couple of weeks ago by a local friend of mine, who has been doing it for several years. It's amazing how fast it can done when proficient at the art, of course good material to work with is a big plus.

Wow, that looks great Mark,
Rock, I will be sure to mark my work so that no confusion results with archaic points, however I doubt I would ever be that good to be mistaken for any ancient tools. LoL

Good isn't a factor in my area. You should see some of the points I find. Some look like kids were making them. Actually most. Good luck with your skills at making your own

Road dog, when you decide what you want made, keep in mind you may loose all the material from your thumb up as it looks to have a crack in the material.

I knap and have killed a deer with my stone heads using flintridge material. Also make my own bows out of osage, my own strings and my own arrow shafts.

Who are you sending that glass to? It would benefit a lot if you were getting it cut before being knapped too... Sometimes it can be tricky to secure a piece to have it cut as well, either way you would get more in the end... And cracks are the devil...

Ok. If you do, post up what you get out of it. I look forward to that...I'll check this weekend for stuff I made from red glass...
